    we had a surge in population thanks to quality of life and health care improvements that caused human population to multiply by 4 over the course of 100 years. that is an obscene surge and not something anyone would want to maintain. the only people fear mongering about birthrate decline (birthrates aren’t declining so much as normalizing) are people who are concerned about white people specifically having less babies in the us, and are on track to lose the racial majority in another 20 years.

    Edit: to the people with low reading comp: a surge is not normal. marginal reduction in current birthrates is a good thing, as we reduce populations to managed abundance. short term hardships with aging populations will be far easier to deal with than continued problems caused by long term crowding, climate harm, and resource depletion, especially since we’re entering a period of late stage capitalism that is transitioning to ‘gig work’, automation, ai — the future will have far less good paying careers with benefits, so we’ll be thankful to have all those elder care jobs for a few generations even if that means we might finally have to tax the rich to pay for it.
