From last week in New Orleans:
Meal was $88.00 which was fine.
Plus mandatory 20% gratuity (i.e., a tip).
Plus 3.5% surcharge (no explanation).
Plus Tax (that's fair).
But here's the kicker – a request for 20-25% MORE tip on top of the 20%

Has anyone else seen attempts for double tips like this?

  1. So…include 20% automatically into the bill, then add another 20% on top of the bill. How like that?

  2. I thought it was the 20% minimum, although there is custom, or pariah, box

Didnt see the 20% gratuity already… Dark Vegas lounge trick. Wait staff dont bring little flashlights

Tip amount on gratuity and sales tax… But probably standard

Another Vegas, reference… Reminds me of resort fees

  3. Find a local group on social media for your town/city and post that. Watch it close down by next year.

  4. It’s been revealed that a lot of restaurants that have the force tip takes that tip and unevenly distribute it between the staff a.k.a. management

  5. That is seriously impressive that they option you to pay $147.81 on an $88 meal. Might as well go all in on the “custom” Tip.

  6. Please tell us what restaurant this is so no one ever goes there again!

  7. Sneaky! I didn’t even see the Gratuity line at first glance.

  8. As a European.. this tipping/gratuity/surcharge system that you have is just confusing.

I understand the history (owners don’t want to pay for their slaves, I mean, servers and patrons started tipping the servers directly) but this is just nuts.

Here, the announced price is the exact price tou pay. American culture has entered the system a bit but nobody is forced to tip.

  9. I’m putting a big fat fucking zero on the custom line. You’ve already been charged for a 20% tip!

  10. Uneducated EU citizen here: What’s the difference between Gratuity and Tip ?

  11. That why I stay home make any foods than go out waste money.

  12. Guessing the surcharge was for the credit card processing. And the additional tip in this scenario is optional.

  13. This is wild. I would expect a 20% gratuity in a large group of say 7 or 8 people, but considering the bill I don’t think that was the case.

  14. I’m staying at an all inclusive resort that we paid for, wife still wants to tip $25 dollars on our dinner bill.

  15. Yup. I had a place that did this and I didn’t catch the mandatory tip so I left a big tip. I didn’t go back and warned everyone I know.

  16. I hope they enjoy the CC chargeback for listing misleading prices.

  17. Yes. Karaoke bar I went to has a 20% gratuity fee built it. I don’t tip anymore lmao

  18. When Yall going to rise up and make tipping a thing of the past?

  19. That is seriously messed up. I would never go there again and would leave poor reviews especially if they did anything to conceal the auto gratuity.

  20. Whoa! They already added 20 percent and they are asking for another tip!? Wth?
