It is the UN’s International Day of Happiness.

It follows the release, on Thursday, of the World Happiness Report which ranks the world’s happiest countries by asking people to evaluate their lives.

Both the UK and the US slipped down the list to 23rd and 24th respectively – the lowest-ever position for the latter.

But it’s not miserable for everyone in the UK – Belfast is the happiest place in the country, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Why? Because people in towns and cities that would return a lost wallet, are the cheeriest places.

Mark Easton went to Belfast to test the theory.

  2. This is lovely to see, but I don’t think you can fully tie it to happiness, I’m a miserable grump and I’ve always turned in wallets, as the caller said “it’s nice to be nice”

  3. I suffer with depression, honestly hate myself at times, have become fearful of people I shouldn’t, and even I would give someone back their wallet.
    I’m a grump, not a cunt.

  4. great results from a highly scientific experiment in a controlled environment, learnt loads

  5. You don’t need to be happy to be a decent human being

  6. Fair play

Why did they chose belfast though. i guess london wouldnt get the same return rate thinking about it lol ?

  7. To be fair, I’ve lost my purse twice and both times have got it back with everything still in there. I expected him to get maybe 8 out of 10 back, but 10 out of 10 is brilliant.

  8. I hate alot of things about this place from the past and present, but this certainly gives me alot of pride for my city 🙂

  9. It is interesting, personally I remember finding a wallet whilst on a night out at uni, It was full of money, I remember the crowd I was with (English home counties types) being astonished that I just handed it in to the bouncers without taking any cash, mind you the bouncers face lit up when he checked it…

What comes around goes around and I’m glad my fellow citizens made the right choice.

  10. I’m absolutely amazed with that 😀.

… and I shouldn’t be. I’ve had my wallet returned to me myself after losing it up fucking cavehill

  11. I’m not at all surprised to be honest, we’ve got our issues but by and large I find our people willing to help others and having a lot of empathy. To add a cynical twist, there’s a reason charities predominantly canvas working class areas, we tend to be more giving and empathetic than wealthier areas.

I’ve lost my wallet so many times I don’t even take one with me anymore and every single time it’s been handed back without anything missing. Even had a bus driver hold on to it for me coming back from his route after someone handed it to him. I love our people.

  12. Well played, GBOL Belfast!

We were in town a few weeks back. Girls sitting near us left so we took their seats as we could see the TV better. One left purse, so two of us bolted out after them and got it returned to the righful owners…

Me and the wee girl were walking to the shops a while back. She spotted a wallet down a few steps of a blocked up pathway. I checked inside, removed the bags of gear, and asked in a few groups if anyone knew the owner. Brother knew him through people in his football team, so the dude came and got it back. I slipped the bags back to him on the shy. He took the notes out (think it was £25) and handed them to me. I handed them to my daughter and we went and had some fun spending it

  13. No coincidence that the wallets were returned in the least diverse part of the UK….

  14. My daughter just told me about this last night her wee friend found 1 and called the number to return, I thought oh that’s weird but er ya go lol
