England, Wales, Scotland and the Irish nations are expecting to land the tournament uncontested with Italy handed the 2032 competition

The UK and Ireland will effectively be confirmed Euro 2028 hosts this week as no bidding rivals have surfaced ahead of Wednesday’s deadline.
Prior to the war in Ukraine, Russia had been expected to come forward but that is now unthinkable. Another potential rival, Turkey, is understood to have been discouraged by senior footballing figures from running.
After the deadline for applications, Uefa will formally name the UK and Ireland as hosts by April 7, with a deadline of the end of the year to receive all the necessary government guarantees.
Security, income tax exemption for any players taking part in the tournament and visas are among commitments required of hosts by the end of the year as part of a detailed plan for how the tournament will look.
Aleksander Ceferin, the Uefa president, has been the architect of the 2028 plans to soften the blow for the UK and Ireland after he dissuaded them from bidding for the 2030 World Cup.
After Boris Johnson went public with support for a World Cup bid last year, the national governing bodies had agonised for months about switching bids.
With Spain and Portugal the favoured option in Europe for a 2030 bid, the UK and Ireland eventually concluded Euro 2028 was the only realistic prospect of success.
Mark Bullingham, the FA’s chief executive, has previously hailed the prospect of what would remain the biggest sporting spectacle in the UK since London 2012.
Uefa rules dictate only two of the five host nations would be entitled to automatic qualification for what is expected to be a 32 team tournament. The most likely solution would be for all host nations to forfeit automatic places.
The UK Government was supportive of the five football associations’ decision to switch to a Euros bid given World Cup hopes appeared doomed.

Of course, the most important part of any bid to hold a major sporting event: the tax exemptions.
UK and Ireland make strange decision to host major international sporting event, despite decades of evidence that doing so is never socially or economically beneficial.
Bit of a shame in a way. Hosting the Euros should ideally be about helping other countries out financially by doing things such as;
– Providing funding to improve their stadiums for domestic use as well as the tournament itself
– Helping increase tourism and related industries
– Prestige and fame
– Potentially giving a country that doesn’t always qualify an automatic route into the cup

In contrast, it seems a bit sterile giving it to us lol. More so when you consider that the already high prices of hotels and tickets etc will be jacked up to the absolute maximum, and will line the pockets of the super rich who have been taking the mick for a while now.
But that aside, fair play to us I suppose! If you’d have asked me 5-10 years ago I’d have snapped your hand off at the chance for us to host another Euros or WC. But I think Covid has slightly sapped some of that enthusiasm from me lol.
Hosting an international tournament is expensive so no wonder there were no other bids, at least we might have been able to save on bribes this way. The fact that the UK already has a huge number of usable stadiums that might only need a lick of paint will help us keep the costs down at least.
It’s coming believe home soon r/dontdeadopeninside
It will be nice for all the knuckle-scraping bellends who’ve been banned from travelling abroad with England to finally have some foreigners to throw chairs at.
The annoying thing is Scotland, Wales, NI and Ireland could host the tournament and only require 2, maybe 3, additional host stadiums/cities from England. However it wouldn’t surprise me if of the ~10 places selected UEFA choose 6 in England and give most of the important games to Wembley.
England could easily host a World Cup or Euros on its own, joint bids should be used as an opportunity for smaller nations that can’t host tournaments to get the tournament experience. Giving Wales a few group stage games and a Quarter Final doesn’t do that.
Something of a volte face, no?
Last year it was all games behind closed doors for England, now nobody else wants to host the tournament we’re top choice again. Funny that.
It’s coming home, it’s coming home, footballs coming home
Footballs coming home…..because nobody else wants it. The only way we get to host something.
Nearly all stadiums on the list are already up to UEFA level 5 so there shouldn’t be too much cost involved in refurbishments. A few airports might need a lick of paint or some other upgrades and Euro2028 will be boom time for train operator profits. Since Wembley has already hosted 2 Euro finals, the last one didn’t show England in a good light, so why not play the Euro2028 final at Hampden Park (51000), Millennium (73000) or Aviva (51000). All the finals played at the Millennium in the early 2000’s provided a great fan experience
We’ve had one Euros, *yes* but what about *second* Euros?!
Remember when the UK risked being barred from hosting the Euros after the shameful scenes at Wembley last year? When Italians were assaulted by rowdy England supporters, when Sancho, Saka and Rashford had monkey emojis and racist slurs spammed at them on social media for missing penalties?
It’s amazing how the current Russo-Ukraine War has effectively eliminated all competition from the Euro 2028 bid, because some of the nations originally in contention would have otherwise been favourites to host.
Wasn’t Javid on the telly just this morning saying we had no money?
Maybe instead of cutting back on infrastructure, the NHS, the social safety net and government departments that actually do shit that helps people, we could just not host this waste of space?
Just an idea.
Why is the FAI still wasting its money on these vanity projects?
Disgraceful situation after what happened at Wembley.

Italy, the only other potential favourite, will be handed the 2032 tournament instead.
