The royal children of the Prince William and Princess Kate will all see a number of changes to their positions as they grow up – least of all in their titles, including Prince Louis. If and when the youngest child of the Prince and Princess of Wales marries, he could inherit a historic Dukedom, and could one day be bestowed with the title the Duke of York by the crown.

The current holder of the title is his grand-uncle, Prince Andrew, so it would be unavailable to Louis if Andrew was still alive when he chooses to marry. Traditionally, the Duke of York title has been given to the monarch’s second-eldest son, so if Prince William is on the throne and it is is available, then it’s up for grabs for Prince Louis.

The late Queen had several sentimental connections to this title – Queen Elizabeth II’s late grandfather, King George V, and her father, King George VI, were both previous Dukes of York.

There is also a possibility Louis could become the Duke of Cambridge. But because he is currently second in line to hold this title – behind Prince George – this may be unlikely. This is because if William becomes King, Prince George could already become the new Prince of Wales, without being titled the Duke of Cambridge.

Louis’ older brother, Prince George, will see the shift in his title when the boys’ father becomes King one day. Prince George is set to become the Prince of Wales and will be the 28th person to hold this title.

When Princess Anne passes, Charlotte will also be eligible to become the next Princess Royal. This title is traditionally given to the monarch’s eldest daughter and is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon a female member of the Firm.
