Looks like the airport will be closed all day today. Hope no one had a flight booked!

  1. This explains the outage alerts for some client sites IT equipment we support at the airport.

That’s going to cause some major issues today! For Heathrow to shut that’s major!

  2. Nothing from BA about my 8am flight being cancelled, yet.

  3. Looking at this, I seem to be on the border between the areas supplied by North Hyde Electricity Substation (where the fire is) and Ealing Electricity Substation. Either North Hyde has more than one transformer (I don’t know these things) or I’m in the Ealing Electricity Substation area (Ealing Grid Supply Point or GSP). Either way, I got lucky,

  4. Bit surprised that the entire airport relies on a single substation? Would have thought an entity of this size and importance would have some kind of redundancy?

  5. Can I get compensation from my airline for this disruption? Anyone got a clue about where the law stands on this?

  6. The flights from America and Canada turned around at Newfoundland. Most flights that were in transit have been diverted to Glasgow, Iceland, Cardiff, Dublin, France, Amsterdam, Brussels, Manchester and Spain.

The American flights are necessarily landing in the same states they took off in. This is chaotic.

  7. Anyone have any idea how I could be impacted with a flight tomorrow?

In theory, the airport should be back open but will my flight get pushed back to fit in replacement flights for those cancelled today?

  8. As someone who worked at data centres for years, your telling me that they don’t have a) a second substation feed or b) backup generators capable of powering enough infrastructure to land planes safely for a day or 2? A substation fire could take days to fix. I suspect they will be out of action for much longer.

  9. I woke up ten minutes ago and was wondering why it was so quiet. I live ten mins away from Heathrow, usually it’s not too bad for noise, but when the flights are grounded, it’s eerie, but not unwelcome as a break

  10. Flight attendant here meant to be landing back into Heathrow (should be on a plane rn) but stuck downroute and not sure when we’re going home! Heck!

  11. Came home yesterday to Heathrow, so glad it wasn’t today

  12. Where are they diverting incoming international flights to?

  13. Looks like it’s T2 that’s mostly affected as our kit in T3 is up

  14. Armchair experts are already out in force this morning. Wonder what it’s like to be a world leading virologist, war strategist and now electrical engineer all rolled into one.

  15. You’d think Heathrow would have back up generators, back up back up generators, and some solar panels/battery storage?

  16. Do the underground at Heathrow still go? Going to London from my hotel is normally a bus ride to Heathrow and the Elisabeth line…
    😬

  17. I was meant to be flying back to Heathrow today from Tokyo via Seoul, got to Seoul around Friday midday local time and my flight has now been delayed until 09:00 Saturday morning, so it’s a night in south Korea for me! Thankfully I’ve been allowed to go through passport control and leave the airport!

  18. You will notice substations are getting security upgrades.

  19. What would be the next steps here for people flying if anyone has an idea/knows which sub to ask?

Friend has a flight scheduled from Asia to LHR arriving tomorrow morning, will now be diverted to Paris.

Would it be the airlines responsibility to transport to London?

Could you claim compensation via the airline as it will likely be later than 3 hours delay to get to London?

Would this be a situation the travel insurance covers anything?

  20. I appreciate that it’s an inconvenience for those intending to fly and probably a massive PITA for all the staff, but I live in the flightpath and it is glorious waking up to the dawn chorus.

  21. I saw this from the M4 last night and called 999. The poor woman very exhaustedly told me they were already aware of it

  22. I have a flight, these things happen. But would be nice to be able to at least manage stuff ourselves online.

Been calling every hour since 6:30 when I woke up, It tells me to go to the website, but the website gives me the following “Your flight is due to depart as planned but, in order to offer you more flexibility, we’re giving you the option to move your booking.”

The cancel booking option is greyed out instead telling me to “contact us”.

The rebook also tells me to “contact us” and that link takes me to their phone number, that told me to manage it online.

If I could manage it online, and get another flight from within the uk, I wouldn’t have an issue.

  23. Looking at FlightRadar, evidently it’s a good day to be a helicopter charter company in the south east today.
