Mass protests as Turkey detains Erdogan’s main election rival • FRANCE 24 English

Turkish police detained Istanbul’s powerful mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, Wednesday over graft and “terror” allegations, prompting outrage from the opposition which slammed it as a politically-motivated “coup”. Imamoglu of the main opposition CHP is President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s main political rival and his detention came just days before the party was expected to name him as its candidate for the 2028 presidential election. FRANCE 24’s Jasper Mortimer reports from Ankara.

  5. Erdoğan does not need to do anything, all those who accused İmamoğlu of corruption, fraud and bribery and gave statements to the police against him are members of the opposition party CHP who did not get a share of the pie!

  6. There are serious allegations of corruption and irregularities in tenders against İmamoğlu and his team. If not fabricated, there are audio recordings, WhatsApp conversation records, and footage of money being transferred. The government has taken these allegations seriously and launched an operation. Those raising these claims are associates of Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the former chairman of İmamoğlu's party.

  25. İstanbul Mayor İmamoğlu did nothing for Istanbul. Spent its budget for his Carrier, paid his trolls. İstanbul went 10 years back. Buses are are burning everyday because of lack of maintenance. Do you know all these?

    This is to inform my fellow Trump supporters. This is what really happened. Erdogan, a strong good leader of Turkey, has arrested over a 100 influential corrupt people. They are put on trial to be convicted for corruption. The protestors support corruption, but they disguise it as pro-democracy. We need to stand with Erdogan, who is a good friend of Trump and America.

  38. What a shame ! Among most Muslim countries Turkey is a stable country with a good economy BUT these people wants to ruin it like Syria or Afghanistan. Foreign agents and countries could be involved in this protest in the name of democracy like in Syria and Libya.
