FM briefs party leaders on Cyprus issue resolution prospects

Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis on Friday briefed political party leaders about the prospects for a resolution to the Cyprus issue, following the recent informal multilateral conference in Geneva.

All political leaders attended, except for the Greek Solution party, which abstained.

After the meeting, PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis expressed hope for a fair solution based on UN parameters. He also highlighted the importance of the electricity interconnection between Greece and Cyprus, stressing that blocking sovereign rights is unacceptable. “We hope the cable is laid in the waters off Kasos and that Greek foreign policy does not sink,” Androulakis said.

SYRIZA President Sokratis Famellos emphasized the need to act quickly to seize the opportunity created by the Geneva discussions and continue talks that began in Crans-Montana.

Meanwhile, KKE’s Giorgos Marinos criticized the lack of positive progress and condemned the EU’s European Defense White Paper as a “manual for war.”

New Left leader Alexis Haritsis urged deepening dialogue for a fair, viable and final resolution to the Cyprus dispute based on UN Security Council decisions.
