Belgian factories rearm in the face of American disengagement • FRANCE 24 English
After the latest EU summit in Brussels confirmed the desire to rearm Europe in the face of American disengagement, Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken (NVA) is interested in the huge Audi site in Brussels – closed since February – as a means of producing weapons. But the idea is not popular with everyone. Here is an example of the profound remilitarization desired by the EU. The transition from civilian to military industries is being explored in several European countries. Report by Alix Le Bourdon and Dave Keating.

Ttump woke up Europe from the nightmare of thinking that they have to depend on the USA for defense. Europe is more than capable of defending itself.
Fier de nos voisins Belges ! Une façon de penser unique. Chaleureux et travailleurs.
Don’t be fooled, this is just a back door way of funding Israel. Israel owns most of Europes defence companies. All the profit goes straight to Israel.
Trump is moving away from NATO with his isolationist one track minded rhetorique. The Oval Office has a threat policies system that is directing and controlling over the actions of the Republican Party members, the citizens of the United States, and, over other countries.
His administration calls for isolating one's country from alliances with and commitments to other countries. Putting it bluntly, Trump must not be trusted in anything at all.
Trump is attacking the world's economy with his tariffs … The world is retaliating with corresponding reciprocal tariffs. Trump has what he wanted: the isolation of the United States from all other countries, and, the impoverishment for all Americans … with the exclusion of himself, his family and of his wealthiest friends.
Canada , Italy and Germany all have huge LAV plants already , NATO needs to diversify and have more aircraft and munitions plants
Good. If USA really wants to be a minor player in the world, and play second fiddle while kowtowing to russia and china, they shouldn't be surprised that nobody wants to buy their weapons anymore. Not to mention USA showing its hand on how easily they can disable weaponry that they have previously provided or sold.
What have they been doing the last three years?
We all know the Brussels have the abundant natural resources needed to make weapons 🤣🤣🤣coal must be used to make weapons these days.
Never ever trust americans again.
great it opens more jobs
We can no longer trust Americans, so the EU will step up along with the UK
I’m Belgian and I hope they transform the Audi factory to a military production factory. The mayor isn’t to happy about the idea. Typical Belgian attitude sadly. We don’t think ahead. Also new plans for a new military base has been cancelled. Many Belgian politicians in the past have downscaled the military again and again. Now we have nothing that matters to defend our country anymore. While we house the head of NATO and the EU. Doesn’t make sense to me.
Belgians are smart people.. so do dutch! Let me tell you this from germany. ( For people who cannot even point these contries on a map 😂)
Meanwhile the US presence hasn't actually changed or gone anywhere. It's still in all the places it's always been. Europe is using this narrative to soften its people. To get THEM to usher in the austerity measures. They've got to get you BIG mad at somebody on the other side of the planet before they strip away your universal health care, and everything else you've been enjoying for the last 30+ years. "We don't need America! We'll buy our own military!" An $800 Billion + investment in military spending? Yeah we know where that's coming from. But more importantly, we know where it's NOT coming from.
If you only read the headline, you will assume that Belgium has started the rearmament process. Instead, they just found one random empty factory and pointed out that they could potentially use it as a weapon factory. Basically, it is just an idea. There is not even a concrete plan to rearm europe. Yes, the weapon factory is just a talk.
No more defeatist talk! We live here and WE WANT THIS! We need these factories working 24/7 to produce arms as fast as possible. That means GOOD JOBS; GOOD MONEY abd a boost to the lo al economy. Worried about security? GOOD! You should be. .MORE JOBS for security guards! Let's go, Belgium!
Better to start now in relative peace than during a full scale war with less than adequate defenses.
NIMBYism at it's finest.
The Rus-bots are strong here.
Trump will make Europe great again
Brussels citizens being concerned that a factory would make them a target is hilarious because Brussels hosts the EU and NATO.
Europe needs to move fast, fast, fast ❤❤❤❤!!!!
Why is trump intent on creating misery for everyone around the world, including Americans? What is his endgame?
Lol yes that Belgian army, we are quaking in our boots.
Sooo DEI consultants can't help Ukraine??? 😅😅😅😂😂😂
Why not? It worked for Americans in 1942. US only exited the Great Depression after mass re-armament started after the American entry into WW2.
I cannot believe that these people represent the average person of Brussels.. they are utterly self centred and quite close to being isolationist in their views..
Hey Europe! 🇪🇺 We’ve got automotive factories ready to be repurposed and plenty of aluminum too! Always here, your reliable Canadian partner! 😉
Without the US, no one will be afraid of the west. These white countries will come begging the US to rescue them like they did during WW2.
Supporting Ukraine’s success is Europe’s best security
Scary!
What a joke. Stick with making chocolate
We have become soft since the end of the Cold War, lulled into a false sense of security
So instead of creating thousands of jobs this individual would prefer to sit on his hands because at some point " it might close " and it might be " dangerous". This is the kind of thinking that makes belgium a joke. Wake up out of your coma, war is at your doorstep. Pull your weight – belgium has some of the lowest defence spending in the entire EU.
Did he really say that weapons would be temporary … have they already forgotten the lesson they are in the process of learning?
A strong arms industry and military are REQUIRED
Just flatly whether you are a pacifistic nation, a warmonger or something in between you MUST be capable of arming and defending yourself or you will be consumed by those who did what you failed to do.
Sickening attitude of appeasement and "I'm alright Jack" by some Belgians
"Rearming in the face of Europe shirking on their defense obligations for years."
Corrected!
Weird arguments in the video. We don't want to need laws against rape either because people should naturally not do it. But they do. And so we also need to be able to protect our sovereignty.
Europe was given notice by every POTUS for the last 25 years that the US was no longer willing to carry the burden of defending Europe. If the Europeans are feeling "betrayed" that this wasn't a bluff and that they now have to pay their own bills, then they were never really friends – they were simply exploiters.
They talk about safety in the Forest Hood, yet it’s already a known drug cartel stronghold with frequent shootings. Instead of wasting time on empty discussions, focus on rearming at the mentioned factory and leave those clueless people behind. Those who oppose it should be scrutinized to see if they’re not compromised by the cartel or Russian influence. With a high-security level, this place could become safe and offer a better life for the struggling people living there.
Listen Belgium, as an American, you should definitely do that immediately
It’s over reacting. Belgium is safe
so, a woman dubs mr Franken?
Belgium is not a country that often toots its own horn. It's even considered a bit taboo to talk about this. But historically we always manufactured some of the best firearms ever.
They should do this on the old Charleroi industrial sites instead. A wapon factory next to the capital city centre… what could go wrong?
Can we get a actuall minister of defense, not this migration clown
