> In what it describes as a “dismal reality”, the JRF said its detailed analysis shows that the past year could mark a high point for living standards in this parliament. It concludes that the average family will be £1,400 worse off by 2030, representing a 3% fall in their disposable incomes. The lowest income families will be £900 a year worse off, amounting to a 6% fall in the amount they have to spend.
> The JRF also said that if living standards have not recovered by 2030, Starmer will not only have failed to pass his No 1 milestone but will also have presided over the first government since 1955 to have seen a fall in living standards across a full parliament.
Just one more round of cuts will surely reverse this decline, right?
> Alfie Stirling, director of insight and policy at JRF, said further cuts were not the way to reverse the trend of falling living standards. Instead, he argued, Reeves should consider raising tax for the wealthiest.
Bah, what does this loonie leftie know? Doesn’t he know that considering literally any alternative to constant and terminal decline simply is not the sensible and grown-up way to do politics?
EDIT: Got absolutely no time for all the people replying to this post whining about immigrants either. Take a moment to consider why every ‘anti-immigration’ party are backed by the exact same billionaires who’ve insisted that there is no alternative to our current economic model. If anti-immigration politics actually dealt with economic inequality, the ultra-wealthy would not endorse it.
Plenty of money for endless war and nuclear apocalypse with Russia though
Obviously an optimal time to slash the living standards of the disabled then
Is it an impossible problem to solve? Genuinely asking. Are we just fucked?
Yet there is always enough money for the rich.
Easier to take from the poor, innit?
If no political party are willing to enforce the will of the people, then it sounds like we need a new system of politics.
We should all listen to Gary Stevenson and tax the goddamn super rich to even it out a little bit.
If only there was a single market we could join that would reduce trade barriers with our closest and biggest trade partners.
A poor economy is a choice.
shock horror, a Labour Government cos playing as Tory Brexiteers, is as bad for the working people as actual Tory Brexiteers.
Not even slightly surprised
This is how we get a Reform government, and I don’t understand how Labour doesn’t see this.
Guess we will be in the same boat as the US soon enough.
Wait until AI computer based employees are released and the UKs service economy spirals.
People people you have to understand the adults are in charge now, so please die with a sense of security that the big boys are in charge- starmer probably as he gleefully cuts another public service
And the politicians are asking why nobody wants to fight for this country.
Flood the country with the 3rd world and what do you expect.
Disabled people are going to be a lot worse off than that.
Ya because we need massive tax cuts, regulation cuts and cuts to government spending to remain a competitive economy. The welfare state is a failed model, if you use it you will be poor.
Time for a reset. Sick of this austerity that seems to have been going on for ever. Fuck the career politicians off and get people in who know have worked in real jobs before. What does Starmer actually know about the working class?
People need to accept the UK is doomed.
You can’t tax more as the tax is already too high for middle class and higher earners even making someone who has a decent salary have money issues
We can’t tax the ultra rich as there will always be loopholes to sort this out the entire world needs to tax the ultra rich together which will never happen
We can’t cut government spending too much as they have already cut to the bone
We can’t invest on anything because we are broke and borrowing more will cause even more inflation
No one is having kids or getting married as they are broke so you have a aging population which leads to higher taxes to care for the old
For the above point we need immigration to pay for the old and sick but that means more expensive housing, more busy and overcrowding. Businesses pay less and hire people who will work for a penny and do a ton of work who is the competition when applying for jobs
Then we have more sick, disabled,.mental illness which costs money, where the reason many get in this state is to all the above I listed
The solution to this problem is stop having hope it won’t get fixed. Regardless of who is in power. Manorirty will suffer but think about yourself and your own family and how you can navigate this. There are people thst do remote jobs and live in Thailand for a better life. There are people who do research lie in there CV get well paid jobs. There are people who don’t pay tax and dodge it. Its a wild wild west and you have to play a dirty game to make your life better and thats the reality and thats what worked for me
Every nation that rises eventually falls history has shown this. Be smart extract as much as money you can out of the UK and jump ship when the time is right. My parents jump shipped and immigrated to this country I will do the same its all about survival
Edit: I seem to have been getting downvoted i only post based on my own speculation and facts. If anyone disagrees can you atleast refute my points. Also if you think there is hope of improvement at what date do think this will happen so we can come back to my post and see if I’m wrong (honestly I wish I was lol)
It’s the NHS/ unions/workers/ poor and the disabled who are the real enemy! We must protect the Billionaires/ corporations/ bankers/ hedge funds/ War criminals/ WMD manufacturers/ CEOS/ private healthcare/ MSM..etc… at all costs!
Surprise, fucking surprise…..
I could have told you that!
There are billions of oppressed but only a handful of oppressors.
I know who my money is on in the revolution. Someone just needs to pull their finger out and start one already.
Damn those disabled people ruining everyone’s lives. So selfish, they need to starve so I can feel a little better about myself.
I’m so glad after 15 long years we managed to keep the Tories in power. The country just wouldn’t have been the same without them.
Can we please just rejoin the EU… I know it’s not the full answer here, but since it’s costing us 37bn a year, maybe it’s worth admitting we were fucking wrong about it since it achieved utterly nothing tangible other than making a bad situation worse.
fair enough. Poor are lazy. i worked in manufactories and warehouses before. People worked in there for a long period of time had poor working attitude on average. Spent almost 2 hours on smoking in a 8 hours shift.
The benefits of mass migration are going to be flowing in any second now!
Mom said it’s my turn to not live hand to mouth for a bit
It’s a big club for them and we’re not in it. Always the way.
That will be 22 years since the 2008 recession, which doesn’t feel like it ever actually ended. I know things can always get worse, but I feel like I’m not sure how much worse off I could be without slipping into poverty. And I’m lucky enough to be able to work full time.
rent reform and housing price reform is sorely needed
They always say “familes”. “Families” this and “families” that. Is that assuming there’s 2 household incomes? What about single income homes? How much worse off they be?
Okay. Quick question, who the fuck is going to be better off, and where do we keep the pitchforks?
Never thought I would he defending Starmer, but could tell this was JRF nonsense before even opening.
>In 1830s London, the city was a hub of political, financial, and trading power, but also a place of stark contrasts, with wealthy areas juxtaposed against overcrowded, unsanitary slums and widespread poverty.
Waheyy /s
Nothing to do with agenda 2030 is it. Not like the conspiracy theorists didn’t predict this. 15 min cities and universal basic income/ “You will own nothing and be happy.”
At some point, people are going to snap and the government are going to see what happens when you push people too far. People will say that British people are too passive to riot, however things are still not that bad for many. Sure, things are not good but most people are still not diabolical for the majority, so we are still at the ‘mustn’t grumble’ phase. Once millennials and Gen Z are well into their 30s and 40s and still have a lower quality of life than their parents/grandparents (by a significant degree), we might finally people snap and finally start to demand better.
This kinda stuff is always just so frustrating. Why don’t we maybe, just maybe, properly go after the supremely wealthy 0.1% instead of squeezing the poor, middle, and even upper middle classes. Eventually we’re ending up with idiots like Reform who will fully gut this country.
It’s even more frustrating that once this country is gutted and robbed blind by the elite, I fully expect people to blame immigrants or people who look different. As opposed to the ultra rich who robbed them.
Genuine question to anyone here who is better informed than myself about the state of the UK economy:
Are there any rays of light whatsoever? Even a tiny little green shoot that we can nurture?
Based on what I read every day we are basically fucked. Surely there must be a way out of this?
Saw the headline and thought this is bollocks straight away
And at least we will have Reform in Government then to sort this mess out as a result. Every cloud and all that..
Poor? Worse off in the future? That’s capitalism, mate.
Can this economic downfall just fuck right off please? I would like to own a house and be happy by the time I’m 40. The great depression lasted 12 years; this depression has lasted 17 years since 2008 and only ever shows signs of continuing decline. I’m starting to believe that nothing will ever get better and this is the new normal now.
FFS of course, but if you read Reddit people still act as unpaid shils for the wealthy political class.
We have undergone the most massive transfer of wealth from the bottom to the top in all western countries in the last 35 years.
It’s certainly not going to change under this government, they are just another power group, privately educated, if not already wealthy, making connections for post political life riches, no interest at all in working class people.
The post word war 2 welfare state & re distribution of wealth has & is going to be completely dismantled.
The last 70s years has been an anomaly & they can’t wait to get back to the norm of a small mega wealthy class & mass poor to serve.
It’s a tragedy
While the rich have one hand in our pocket, the other is pointing at those bloody immigrants, woke trans folk, literally anything to make us fight amongst ourselves…
… and social media has taken their agenda from the TV and newspapers, amplified the rage, and stuck it in your pocket in place of your money.
We need a revolution.
It’s ok everyone. We’ll quickly help the Ukraine for 100 years and then we may fix this.
