“Give a man a reputation as an early riser and he can sleep ’til noon.”
Mark Twain.
Because they recognise that the Tory party will prioritise them over young people, as they have always done. Both parties will primarily work in upholding as stratified economy with high equality and moderate growth, but Labour will throw a bit more of a bone to the poorest, and the Conservatives to the shires and old people.
Nobody should be in poverty. On the whole, young people have it much worse than older people. When I was on minimum wage and full time employment, my nan (retired) was ultimately getting about £100 per month less than I was – housing association flat, pension credit, council tax support e.t.c. and with no need to save anything. That was enough for her to live an okay life, highly active with fitness and leisure (discounts for older people) and annual holidays. It was immeasurably better a life than it was for me when I was unemployed, being metaphorically kicked in the face by the Kafkaesque DWP, and seeking work in a town of massive structural unemployment and with my own mental health issues at the time.
Relative to my nan and now in employment, I lived an incredibly spartan existence, saving half my paycheque to facilitate eventually buying my own place. Admittedly I can now retire at 40 given I’m on a much better income but still live as if miles below the poverty line, only now with a mortgage instead of rent, but there is no doubt that things are much tougher for the young.
Old people vote Tory because they are selfish and know that it will better for them than Labour. That’s it. In fairness to Nan though she was a communist.
cause they’re saying they’re sticking it to the people they don’t like.
Politicians cynically direct funding and advantage towards people most likely to keep them in power, is shock finding of world’s least surprising investigation.
Not the entire reason but a contributing factor of psychology:
Because everyone keeps saying old people vote Tory…it’s unbelievable how much hive mentality works. A large number would switch to labour if every sector of media said, ” all old people vote labour.”
If you classify and group people and then say everyone of that Ilk are doing one thing, the effects are overwhelming.
People don’t like to think or research and assume others in their group have done the work in finding out what is best for them.
Sheep.
Because it’s Bellend Britain. Never a shortage of bellends in this here land. People here would vote for the guy pickpocketing them, there and then, in plain sight.
its almost like its more of a class issue than slapping “physical identity trait x” on it and screaming at statues actually deals with.
Because they’re terrified of the red menace, immigrants, foreigners, taxes, crime, Brussels, bendy bananas and house prices falling. And they think the Tories hate all those things.
With older people the biggest readers of newspapers, they read a lot of biased information and do not have the ability to fact check what they have read with what is actually happening. The Tories are also socially conservative and like to reminisce about the good ol’ days, which speaks volume to elderly voters too. A lot of people reach a point where their views are reluctant to change, even with new information, so they vote for the same party for decades after that point (millennials and Gen Z will see the same). With the Tories being the party that is determined to keep the UK in the 50s, elderly people will flock to them because of that.
When did they vote again? When did you all hold your last election? Asking for clarification.
Fuck off Polly, you did your part in the anti corbyn campaign.
Now we are stuck with Grey Starmer.
This is the meme of the guy shooting the other guy on the sofa and saying “why would he do this”
Because you aren’t really poor if you can watch your children in deeper poverty than you. And know you voted for it. And hope to do it again.
For such are boomers. They’ll suck a billionaires dick so he can fuck you more comfortably.
My mother in law has always voted for the nasty party and will not listen to any argument against them. Her excuse at the last election was Johnson had promised her a free TV licence. She’s also a daily mail reader and as thick as a boxing day turd.
Let’s face it the vast majority of the public are just dumb fucks. I wish I could say it more elegantly but why bother? I was watching a TV program about a shrine where tens of thousands visit each year and believe some woman had her head chopped off and a priest popped it back on and she came back to life. Really are we are surprised they cant work out the truth of corrupt politics. It’s hopeless for the current electorate, we will just have to wait and see if a more enlightened youth manage to avoid being duped as much as their grand parents. Some signs are promising, especially with the environment, but I’m not so sure about politics in general as I haven’t really seen any in-depth analysis. Normally the youth are being dismissed as woke or lazy. Maybe the old see the threat……
Because they have dementia, and don’t understand what’s happening.
Toynbee rarely write a good column. Admittedly – or hence – I did not bother to read this one.
Ah ye because the alternative is any better… Every single one of those MPs is a self serving dickhead. Conservative, Labour, Green, Reform, SNP, Lib Dem they are all the same.

See Section 5.
Also, Tories have just 23% of electorate. Labour 21%. Both are fairly static figures.
Non-voters are however 31%, and increasing…
Nonsense, they get double that of an unemployed person, poverty indeed.
Many have spent years reading the daily heil and daily express. It is as simple as that.
Because the Tory party rarely change anything and a lot of older people don’t want to vote for wholesale change and all the risk that comes with it.
Not exactly rocket science, is it?
The insults I see in these comments directed at the elderly….
It’s pretty telling that the Tories are consistently ahead of Starmer, despite being up to their necks in corruption, scandal and financial crises.
Until Labour get a genuinely powerful and charismatic leader, they will never get any power back.
Right now they have a leader who has all the right wing ideology of Blair but without the charisma to make him likeable.
Because they read the Daily Mail, the average age of a DM reader is 60
[https://www.hurstmediacompany.co.uk/daily-mail-profile/](https://www.hurstmediacompany.co.uk/daily-mail-profile/)
Add to that the Daily Express and Telegraph which won’t be much different.
Tories nearly always capitulate and offer some sop/bribe to pensioners is why, they very likely will again.
