On Wednesday, the chancellor will tell the country about the economic challenges confronting Britain and the tough choices required. The real story of the spring statement, however, will be our national need for growth — and the City of London, and the financial services it has always represented, must be part of that story.

As well as generating 13 per cent of the UK’s economic output and creating more than 2.4 million jobs, our financial and professional services sector contributes nearly £110 billion in taxes.

Some people look at the City and see a problem — a tall poppy that needs to be scythed down. I see an opportunity for this centre of global excellence to do even more for the health, wealth and communities
