Germany will carry a one-goal lead into the second leg of its UEFA Nations League quarterfinal against Italy on Sunday.

Italy will have to overturn a 2-1 deficit away to Germany on Sunday if it’s to reach the last four of this year’s UEFA Nations League, where a clash against either Portugal or Denmark awaits. The Azzurri took the lead at home to Die Mannschaft in Thursday’s opening leg but couldn’t hold on as a second half turn around saw the momentum shift in favor of Germany, who is now the favorite to top this tie. Julian Nagelsmann’s side has now won its last two meetings with Italy and is undefeated in this fixture since June 2012 as it seeks to advance to the Nations League semifinals.

Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali followed up Sunday’s Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool by opening the scoring against the Germans at the San Siro midweek.

But Nagelsmann & Co still proved too much to handle after Borussia Monchengladback bolter Tim Kleindienst cancelled out the breakthrough with his third goal in five games for his country.

Leon Goretzka came up with the decisive goal in Milan to ensure Germany went home with a first-leg cushion, rising highest at the corner to head home for Joshua Kimmich’s second assist of the evening.

Kleindienst, 29, was playing in the second tier of German soccer as recently as two years ago, but is now strutting his stuff on the biggest stages for his country – and he doesn’t look a bit out of place.

It seems inevitable he will keep his place as the tip of the spear for Germany, while captain Kimmich continues to prove himself as an invaluable cog for the national team.

One who looks likely to be missing for Italy is Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori, who came off injured at the end of the first leg following an awkward slip under no pressure from the opposition.
