Government doesn’t want to discuss cannabis decrim/legalization at the Citizens Assembly

  1. No Irish politicians really have the drive to take it on as an issue.

Waiting to see what happens in Germany I’d say.
They started moving towards legilisation late last year. Be interesting to see what happens there.

  2. To be fair, by “dealt with by Dáil committee and expert group” they mean that decriminalisation is technically already government policy. They just haven’t made any real progress on that.

  3. Until enough politicians stop listening to Midlands Mary and Larry nothing will be done. That generation will have to die off before you see progress.

  4. Can’t be surprised really, just look at how restrictive things are even with alcohol here. Can’t fucking buy it whenever you want, only during certain hours that some pricks felt entitled to decide for everyone else, and all nighttime venues close earlier than basically everywhere else in Europe. The majority of politicians were the type of people who never properly enjoyed themselves when they were young, likely all uptight dry frigids, so they don’t relate to anyone looking for further liberties to enjoy themselves how they want to as individuals, rather than how the state sees appropriate. The only way this type of thing will change is when there’s a domino of other more significant countries in Europe leading the way

But that also makes me question what the fuck the rest of Europe is at as well since legalisation of cannabis has been going on in major states in the US for most of the last decade and Canada and Uruguay have full legalisation a while too

  5. Taming zebras would be easier than getting Martin and Leo behind decriminalisation. You’re better of spending your time and energy having good conversations with your family and friends who might still vote FFFG and trying to persuade them either not to vote or vote for anyone else.

  6. Ireland will make absolutely zero divergence from the UK in terms of scheduled drugs, nomatter how many miracles are attributed to CBD oil or how much tax they made in Colorado.

  7. The last few govs have been shitting on younger generations for years. I’m surprised none have taken up this mantle to try and win back some votes. I can’t imagine anyone under 30 voting FFG in their lifetime except the smug neocon YFG types and proto-facists who go around wearing MAGA hats in Ireland.

  8. If you were looking at it from a pure revenue pov it’s stupid not to legalize it when the state could make billions off it, good for the state, good for the tax payer. Bad for drug dealers and people who view themselves as moral authorities.

Also brilliant for me because the whole reason weed culture is so obnoxious is because it’s illegal. People wouldn’t get to act like they’re all mad for smoking it if you could just get it in a shop easy as you would buying cans in the off license.

  9. Think the recent UVF attacks have anything to do with this? They would stand to lose a lot of money and power if it were legalized.

On this matter our government won’t dare do shit without prior consent and approval from the UK government.
