Nique Clifford hits a layup just before the buzzer to extend CSU’s lead. He’s got 12 points and the Rams have the Terps on upset watch.
Alabama has its largest lead of the game with just under 8 minutes left.
It used to be that newly hired coaches needed at least three or four years to revitalize struggling programs. Now, the transfer portal has made it possible to overhaul a talent-bereft roster in a single offseason. Kentucky’s Mark Pope is one of four first-year coaches in this year’s Sweet 16, joining Arkansas’ John Calipari, Michigan’s Dusty May and BYU’s Kevin Young.
Young at least had returning talent with which to work. The others virtually started from scratch building their rosters when they arrived.
Mark Pope has the Wildcats back in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2019 in his first season as head coach!
Koby Brea was the star of the show for Kentucky with 23 points on 10-for-16 shooting. Kylan Boswell led Illinois with 23 points of his own.
The Wildcats will meet Tennessee for the third time this season in the Sweet 16. They won both regular season matchups against the Vols.
This is quickly becoming a foul and free throw shooting fest down the stretch.
After starting 4 of 16 from the field, the Terps have found their footing and hit four straight shots, but Colorado State still leads 24-19 with under 8 in the 1st half.
The Crimson Tide are still up double digits as the game creeps down under the 15-minute mark. Their length and perimeter shooting is giving the Gaels all sorts of trouble.
Mouhamed Dioubate just hit another 3.
The game is now under the 3-minute mark and the Wildcats are up 8. Will Kentucky close this one out and advance to the Sweet 16 in Mark Pope’s first season as head coach?
The Sweet 16 is within reach for Kentucky. But it’s not a done deal. Illinois has cut a 16-point deficit to 74-64 with 3:21 remaining and is still within striking distance. But it will require a substantial Kentucky collapse to pull off.
CSU’s Jalen Lake hits each of his first three shots, including two 3s, and the Rams are out to a quick 12-8 lead on Maryland.
It’s been a fast pace in the opening minutes of this 4 vs. 12 seed matchup.
No. 12 Colorado State has a chance to be one of the few Cinderellas to advance to the Sweet 16.
Kentucky has responded — again. The Wildcats’ lead is back up to 15 after eight straight Kentucky points from Kentucky Brea. Brea’s second 3-pointer in three possessions pushed the Kentucky lead to 68-53 midway through the second half.
Brea’s up to 21 points for the game.
The Crimson Tide are still in control as the game heads into the break. They’ve out-rebounded the Gaels 24-11 up to this point.
Illinois is weathering the Kentucky storm and has cut a 16-point Kentucky lead to nine at the second TV timeout of the half.
A Kasparas Jakucionis 3-pointer cut the the Kentucky edge to 60-51 and prompted a Kentucky timeout with 11:50 remaining.
With just over 3 minutes left in the first half, Alabama still has a healthy lead on St. Mary’s. Chris Youngblood has 10 and the Crimson Tide are dominating the boards so far in a 31-22 game. Cliff Omoruyi is also finally on the board after this alley-oop dunk.
The second half has started much like the first. Kentucky’s reeled off an 8-0 run after halftime to extend its lead to 45-32 and is firmly back in control after allowing Illinois to close the gap late in the first half.
The start of the run looked very much like the first half, with an Andrew Carr steal leading to an Otega Oweh layup on the other end. Another Oweh layup pushed Kentucky’s lead to 13 points and forced Illinois to call a timeout.
The Tide have pushed out to an 8-point lead with just over 9 minutes left in the first half after treys from Grant Nelson and Chris Youngblood.
It’s been a pretty even start to the game as Alabama and Saint Mary’s feel each other out. The Gaels aren’t shooting the ball very well but the Crimson Tide have turned the ball over 5 times already.
We’re deadlocked at 13 with 11:37 left in the first half.
Kentucky threatened to run away with the game while opening a 25-13 lead built on eight steals that led to 14 points. But Illinois withstood the run and cut Kentucky’s edge to 35-32 before an unfortunate foul with 1.5 seconds remaining in the half.
The Wildcats padded their lead with two Trent Noah free throws after a pair of Illinois defenders fell into Noah on the perimeter and go into halftime with a 37-32 advantage.
Lamont Butler leads the way for Kentucky with 10 points and three assists. He halted the Illinois rally with a pull-up 3 and two free throws on consecutive Kentucky possessions late in the half.
Kentucky’s shooting 45.2% from the field and has forced eight turnovers via steals. But it hasn’t forced a turnover since opening the early 25-13 lead. Kylan Boswell leads Illinois with 10 points.
The Crimson Tide and Gaels have tipped, and Alabama is on the board first with a 3-pointer from Chris Youngblood.
The Tide are 6.5-point favorites in the East region matchup.
