  1. Forcible deportations, abductions, and the deprivation of basic rights — these are just some of the grim realities Ukrainians face under Russian occupation. While many judge war by frontline movements, its true purpose and ultimate goal — liberating those trapped under occupation — often remain behind the headlines.

    Since the start of Russia’s invasion in 2014, at least 2.5 million Ukrainians have experienced life under occupation. For those whose cities fell under Russian control in 2014, daily survival has been a harsh reality for 11 years.

    On the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, we share the insights of Ukrainians who have experienced occupation — exploring what it means to be deprived of your rights in your own home and to wake up each day hoping for freedom.
