  1. Interessante que há um overlap muito grande com os países com piores economias. Pergunto-me se haverá alguma relação…

  2. Ths is a common trend in Italy.Whilst there are obvous economic advantages to staying under one roof, ultimately it’s a different way of life where the family is much more of a social support group.Even when members become financially independent and even have children, it’s more likely that they will build an extension/move to a bigger property than part ways. The family bond is incredibly strong.

  3. I will explain Greece in a few words.

Basic salary ~520e-600e.Rent + utilities = 300e (best case scenario).Add groceries etc and you are pretty much financially crippled.Unemployment is ridiculous so even finding a basic salary job is hard.

Most people prefer to stay with their parents (owned houses/no rent) to be able to maintain a basic social life. They tend to move out when they get married/engaged and they are able to split expenses, since flat sharing with strangers isn’t really a thing

Comparing it to the netherlands, a similar apartment + utilities is 500-600e and basic salary is ~1600-1700.Even if you add groceries you still have quite a lot each month to get by and even save.Unemployment is quite low so most graduates immediately move out.

The discrepancy is even larger for skilled professionals since in Greece you will be in the 1000-1300 range while in the Netherlands you can easily get ~ 2500-3000 for junior positions.

All of the above are personal observations on the 25-35 age group.I tried to compare similar jobs/housing but you can always find extremes to counter my examples.

  4. In some cultures (like many of the warmer colors in this map),it‘s normal to stay at home with one‘s parents later into life.

For example,my father-in-law is Italian. He lived with his parents until he married in his 30s,and then moved in with his wife. When his mother became old and ill, they moved back in with her to take care of her.
