This is outrageous and indefensible. I don’t care if it’s the “populist” position to take, with the state of the country as is currently, MPs do not deserve a pay rise whatsoever. We should be indexing their compensation to metrics connected with the performance of the country overall on various measures (as is typically done for executives of a private company). Rewarding underperformance financially will just amplify the incentives this swamp have to carry on bungling. If the British people had any backbone, they would have taken to the streets in revolt five years ago.
Meanwhile, the Reeves job destroying effect continues…..
Morrisons has announced plans to shut down 17 stores, 52 cafes and dozens of over a hundred other in-store services.
The supermarket chain also plans to cut 18 market kitchens, 13 florists, 35 meat counters, 35 fish counters and four pharmacies in the next few months.
Morrisons said these closures are a reaction to ‘significant cost increases’.
And nobody wants to riot yet? Just want to cry online
Also very generous holidays and pensions.
Also heavenly subsidies services bars, restaurants and whatever else they can scam out of us.
Also an expenses system to abuse.
Totally unacceptable on the day they’ve just announced 15% civil service cuts.
What planet are these people on?!?!
About time. Those MPs have suffered enough from pay cuts and awful working conditions.
I’m hoping that the MPs can start advocating for the rest of society to receive pay rises and improve conditions.
Hahaha hahaha you kidding me right. Explains the 5bil benefit nonsense.
They should be taking a pay cut to bring it more in line with average
Putting aside that this is disgusting with the public sector spending cuts, I think MPs should get paid more and that they should absolutely be barred from other sources of income while in office, and with much more comprehensive vetting and standards for conflicts of interest; in the name of stamping out corruption and abuses of position.
Hopefully they’ll get above 100k soon and will fight to remove the 100k tax trap.
I’ll throw the cat among the pigeons and say that I don’t think they get paid enough for the job. You are responsible for running government and representing your community at a government level. It should definitely be a six figure salary.
My only problem with that is that they should actually be doing their job. They should either be present in their local consistency or they should be attending parliament.
Take certain MPs for example who get paid their full salary and piss off to America to wank off the president and his pals. Not acceptable.
They should be held accountable the same as any other worker. If that is the case then it absolutely deserves a 6 figure salary but sadly that isn’t the case. They can take the salary and do fuck all and still get paid.
Honestly don’t have a problem with this. 2nd and 3rd + jobs on the other hand…
Are you kidding?! They’ve attacked pensions, the disabled, starving kids and now they want a pay rise.
Is this an actual joke?
I bet they all showed up for that vote. Followed by the free 3 course dinner and obviously free drinks. They take the absolute piss.
MPs should be paid significantly more to attract people who are are currently excelling in high paid professions. It needs to be a viable alternative career path with the same level of pay as people running companies. I want the best and brightest, and as few people interested in politics as possible.
The shouldn’t be allowed to have second jobs, or take money from lobbyists.
Once they are no longer MPs they shouldn’t be allowed to take jobs where they use their remaining political connections or influence.
MPs salaries are at this weird point whereby they definitely are too low, for the kind of person we should want running our country. But for the kind we have right now, raising them seems too nice.
The £100k tax trap suddenly get a lot of traction.
Side note, this pay is still way too low
Oh thank god for that. For a moment, I was worried our poor representatives in parliament might not be able to afford a swimming pool in their 3rd home.
Hopefully they’ll cut even more of the services the poorest people in the country rely on in order to pay for this.
It’s £93K. It’s nothing. Top execs get paid double. If you want competent good people running the country and not morons or just the rich (or both) you have to pay accordingly.
I work in charity and I always get people outraged I don’t do it for free. If you want competence you have to pay for it, and y’know the people who make the decisions about running the country should probably be paid decently and be competent.
Meanwhile I’m looking at an advert for a job paying around minimum wages and it requires an MSc.
Don’t they always say, every year without fail, it’s not their choice because of an external body. Erm yeah sure, and who set up that external body! But yet, Corbyn donated his pay rise a few years running.
This will no doubt be downvoted to hell, but they should be paid more for what they do.
On the face of it, they get a good wage. £91k, plus good pension, and costs of running an office and a residence outside of London. Pretty sweet deal, eh?
Then you look at what they have to do. Not only do they have to be in Parliament and research, debate, and vote on laws, but some of them also have the responsibilities of being a Minister running a government department. For which they get a slight uplift, but are still responsible for setting policy and the agenda in major parts of people’s lives. As well as being responsible for thousands of civil servants.
Then, they have to be a constituency MP. What you see are things like MPs opening village fetes, going to visit community groups, and shaking hands with dignitaries. What you don’t see are MPs lobbying councils and government departments to get funding for community groups, dealing with people trying to navigate the benefits system, taking up public causes to improve services, running constituency surgeries, and representing the interests of their constituents at all levels of government.
They are frequently working 100+ hours a week, often with many days or even weeks away from family and their home. Any time that Parliament is not sitting they are focussing on constituency work, so they rarely get any actual time off. And they can be called back to Parliament at a moment’s notice to potentially make huge decisions like whether or not the nation should go to war.
In any other sector if you had to do all of that for £91k you would be laughed at, aside from a few people who seem to love working long hours. For what they do they are vastly underpaid.
It’s a 2.8% rise in line with inflation recommended by the independent body that sets their salaries.
This is a huge nothing-burger.
MPs accepting a pay rise is just an admission that the average salary that the rest of us have to live on is not good enough. If they are supposed to represent the people, they should be finding ways to raise living standards of the people, BEFORE they award themselves huge pay rises.
This is a non story since 2015 MP pay has been tied to average changes to earnings in the public sector.
Only if they do not have other jobs that includes non-executive directorships.
If you are an mp that is all you should be doing, not using it as a way to gain extra financial benefits.
It’s a 2.8% rise, less than most public sector rises? Why the outrage?
Id rather they were paid £200k a year (arbitrary made up number to prove a point), but banned from taking on any external work, consultancy and banned from expenses that aren’t travel or work related (i.e. second houses, entertainment).
In Singapore, MPs are paid the equivalent of £550,000, because they want to make sure the job attracts the best, and the best need to be renumerated in line with what they’d earn in the private sector.
It works as the government has one of the lowest corruption indexes worldwide and some of the highest constituent satisfaction rates (93%).
We should be paying our MPs far more to encourage the very best to want to take what is a pretty thankless, unpleasant job on.
This reflects badly on a week Labour are announcing cuts and austerity 2.0, but the salary is set by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority, not Labour.
I think a fairer system would be to axe expenses (or strictly regulate them more), tie salaries to average median wage increases (rather than inflation), so it’s based on how well people do in general, remove allowances for second homes and build a halls of residence (or appropriate one of the government buildings) in Whitehall for use for MPs that sit either outside an hour of London, or that need to spend more than a day there on parliamentary or government business or something. Ban second jobs or any other financial interests, and increase transparency of their funding.
But this requires MPs to actually change the system, and no one is going to voluntarily make themselves worse off without a benefit down the line.
Anyone complaining is an idiot. Less than 100k is a joke for politicians running our country. This is why there are such high levels of corruption. In countries with low level of corruption, their leaders get paid a lot.
They should double MP’s pay and bar them from taking any other income.
Who the fuck would do that job for less than six figures???
