‘Hundreds of thousands of Covid cases’ – but no new restrictions says Stephen Donnelly

  1. Feels like we are just waiting to see what other European countries blink first. Just like with previous attempts to control the spread.

Most have much better health services then us though.

  2. “No need” for new restrictions – but then goes on to say the restrictions we’d need to control the spread would be too great (costs>benefits). Fair enough, but not the same as no need. I know we’re “back to normal” but it feels a bit shit – normal interspersed with a really bad flu season every 3/4 months, and no idea/data on long covid or other lingering impacts.

  3. Myself and older son are positive only symptoms sneeze which is gone, didn’t bother registered to hse. Myself after booster and young fellow two doses and we self isolate. I’d say every one going to get it

  4. With case numbers as high as they are it is very likely that most people on the island have been exposed already. Don’t buy that padlock for the barn door.

  5. I’d say it has been extremely stressful making these calls. With the rate at which covid mutates it’s impossible to model it (in terms of spreading and lethality) and, by extension, predict how dangerous a surge will be. Not to mention that they get so much backlash no matter what call they make.

At this point I’m more inclined to go the UK route and allow it to spread while it seems to be causing only mild symptoms in most people. I just wish Ireland were pumping money into healthcare infrastructure so that we can adequately care for those who get very sick.

  6. Emergency legislation runs out on Thursday and I don’t think we are in such extraordinary times that a renewal of emergency legislation is needed.

Claire Byrne had some poll last night where 65% of people polled favoured mandatory masks. This doesn’t tally with my observations when out and about that only 10% are wearing masks. Why don’t the other 55% just wear a mask rather than ask the government to make it mandatory???

  7. The government said they are letting the domestic covid pass legislation expire at the end of this month (so they would have to re-legislate to bring it back) – are they still doing that? Haven’t seen any word on that.

  8. Day 7 vaccinated and boosted and this is the milder varient. Fucks sake would have hated to have seen Delta while unvaccinated.

I can come out of isolation today with a mild cough and a positive test (well on HSE website it says that no further test required). I think self isolation rules need to change first. I think a negative antigen should be required to come out if isolation. I know I’ll be staying in isolation (apart from my walk around the quiet Forrest or field’s later on) until I go negative as I don’t want to pass this on.

It’s insanity that we are allowing people to move freely after 7 days with no test required and they can still have a mild cough….. Surely that is asking for this to be spread further

  9. I’m triple vaccinated and currently have it. I’ve had worse hangovers tbh. Biggest issue is that I’ve no childcare this week as my kid also has it.

  10. With [10% of those who catch Covid affected by Long Covid](https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/long-covid-a-lot-of-people-are-suffering-in-silence-unable-to-return-to-full-capacity-1.4799748), that’s tens of thousands of Long Covid cases. Given the potential impact of Long Covid, that’s quite an impact on society.

I don’t know whether it’s the case that you can get Long Covid out of any bout of Covid (as in get it on your third bout when you didn’t before) – if it is, then catching Covid “a couple of times a year” for the next three years gives you a nearly 50% (47%) chance of getting Long Covid at some point over the next three years.

  11. Does anyone know if the earlier Omicron variant protects at all against this newer one that seems to be running rampant? I’m not particularly afraid of catching it, but I’m heading to Thailand in a few days and a reinfection detected upon arrival would see me thrown into quarantine for 10 days there.

  12. What I don’t understand is if the CMO and government say we don’t need masks. Why are people of less authority undermining this by saying bring them back? These same people said trust the science and all that.

  13. I tested positive on 2 antigens on Sunday after starting to feel shite on Saturday night (headache, sore all over, stomach cramps) I registered my positive on the HSE site.

Do the HSE send you out antigens to test yourself before you stop isolating? or I just take it as read that I’m free from Sunday?

  14. I still haven’t caught it. Despite my whole family getting it and being around other people who have had it. Why is covid rejecting me?

  15. I haven’t caught it yet but at this point it feels like dodging bullets. Every second person at work has it. Or has had it.

My dad has managed to avoid it too. No idea how, seeing as my mum had it.

  16. I still haven’t caught it, neither has anyone in my family. We’re all careful and are lucky to have careful friends. I can’t understand why people aren’t wearing masks on public transport and the like.

Maybe the oul’ luck will run out but I’m really hoping to ride out this wave too.

  17. Nah, he can fuck off. I doubt the lockdown and restrictions did much. At this point we have to live with the virus as bad as that sound’s. We can’t eradicate it as much as we can
