The Pope will take on a less busy schedule as he recovers from a critical bout of double pneumonia which left him in hospital for 38 days, cardinals, priests and doctors have said, leading to suggestions that he may not be ready to meet the King in a fortnight.

Francis, 88, returned to the Vatican on Monday after being treated at Gemelli hospital in Rome following advice from his medical team, who said he was better off at home due to the infections that proliferate in hospitals.

He will remain in relative isolation at Casa Santa Marta, which houses priests who work at or are visiting the Vatican, as part of his convalescence.
