  1. > ‘When I was a business administration apprentice, I was told by HR that I could only have three seizures a month – as if I was somehow in control,’ Emma recalls.

Imagine saying something so brain dead with a straight face.

  2. unacceptable treatment. also, the article was written in memory of a Metro journalist who died last year from UDEP – sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. rather touching tribute.

  3. Businesses should do what they can do allow people with disabilities or health issues into the workplace. However in this case I’d argue that it’s the individual who is at fault. They knew their condition yet went into training for a career working with young children. There’s no amount of precautions that can be put in place which will resolve this. She is putting children at risk by being there in the first place. Her photos show 3 examples: a bloody nose, black eyes, broken teeth. Her view is summed up in her own words as:

    >Looking at me I’m a young, fit and healthy person, but there’s this hidden condition I live with.’

But that’s just factually incorrect. She has a health issue, one which means she cannot do the job. How she can say that is just reckless.

  4. If it got to the 27th and I hadn’t had a seizure yet I’d be making sure I had seizures on the 28th, 29th and 30th.

  5. This sort of bollocks from employers is why so many people who, in theory, could do some form of work end up on disability benefits.

  6. I reckon what actually happened was they said three absences was the trigger point for absence management procedures…

  7. You can only die twice in a twelve month period otherwise it’ll be a disciplinary write-up.

  8. I’ve been having almost the exact same issue with my employer >_<

  9. It’s a whole lot easier to argue with PIP as opposed to “getting off your ass to get a job” and being treated like this lol

We wonder why we have a problem

  10. It seems Human Resources departments have forgotten their primary focus, to get the best out of their employees.

They should be looking at their employees and working out how to get the maximum motivation and incentive out of their staff to maximise productivity.

If you have an employee who has seizures and needs time off for recovery then work out how they can maximise their productivity in times when they are able to…

can they work longer hours to make up for lost time? Give them flexibility to work when they are able? Change the employee onto an hourly rate, implement a time sheet, if they are in a customer focused role or in a role directly linked to profitability offer them the ability to retrain into a different role where their time isn’t as critical to the outcome of the business?

  11. people with epilepsy are going to likely be one of the groups who get absolutely all of the health-related benefits removed in entirety. You will never get employed, have fun on £80 a week until you die.

  12. Fully expected the employer to be Sainsburys and their deplorable sickness policies.

  13. Does this shit ever work? Like I’ve worked in places where it’s so strict they want you to sit in silence cos if you’re chatting you aren’t working, and you can only get up to pee in the allotted time etc and everyone just leaves as soon as they can, no one does any extra work or tries to help out because the bosses are dickheads.

I’ve also worked in relaxed places where it’s get your work done but by all means have a laugh, flexitime all that shit. And people die for the job, volunteer for overtime, genuinely help each other out.

Like if this woman is at the hospital 5 times a month but otherwise is absolutely smashing her job, then fine, it’s not like she can help it.

There’s dickheads who take advantage in both systems regardless and I’ve never quite understood punishing everyone else with just draconian bullshit because all it does is alienate the good people who work for you.

  14. I’ve read some stupid shit in my 40 years on this earth, but this is a level of stupidity I don’t think I’ve witnessed before.

She should sue them for discrimination and wrongful dismissal.

  15. Am I allowed to save them all up over the year and fucking go for it everyday in December?

  16. This doesn’t surprise me. Incompetent managers with incompetent training with incompetent hr and incompetent leadership. These are the sort of improvement notices I’ve come across.

  17. Even people with non epileptic fits can’t choose when they have one wtf

  18. People: Get disabled people into work! Those who can work should work!

This disabled person: Hi I’m working as well as I can but work may be temporarily disrupted by some siezures, I will catch up on work whenever required.

People: And this is why nobody wants to hire disabled people! They just can’t work with their conditions! You can’t expect other poeple to put up with disruptions and other poeple’s health needs!

  19. I don’t know what the triggers are for this person’s seizures of course (if there are any) but a family member has them when he doesn’t get enough sleep and when he eats high carb/high sugar and takeaways.
Whereas when he eats keto/low carb and gets plenty of rest and sleep, he doesn’t get them. His medication makes him drowsy, so sleep is vital.

  20. I have an autoimmune condition that flares up periodically and randomly, causing pain and fatigue.

HR told me that because I can’t predict or control when these flare-ups will happen, it’s no different to anybody else catching a cold.

I don’t work there anymore, obviously.
