Greece, Italy, UK, Portugal, Netherlands, France, and Thailand are raising tourist taxes for 2025, significantly impacting travel costs and reshaping summer vacations.
Don’t get caught off guard by new taxes on your summer vacation plans.
As summer approaches, many popular tourist destinations are introducing or increasing taxes for visitors to help improve infrastructure and support sustainable tourism. Here’s what you need to know before you go.
Greece – €8.00 per night
Greece has significantly raised its daily tourist fee to €8.00 per night during the peak season from April to October. Outside of these months, the fee drops to €2.00. This hike is aimed at funding climate change adaptation, disaster prevention, and infrastructure upgrades.
Santorini & Mykonos – €20.00 per night
To tackle overtourism, Greece has implemented a hefty visitor tax for its most popular islands, Santorini and Mykonos. Tourists will be required to pay €20.00 per night upon arrival at the port.
Venice – €5.00 per day
Venice’s trial tourist tax for peak hours in 2024 will officially roll out in 2025. Visitors entering the city between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM during select dates in April, May, June, and July will be required to pay a €5.00 tax.
Scotland – 5% levy on accommodation costs
Starting July 2026, Edinburgh will introduce Scotland’s first tourist tax, known as the Visitor Levy. The charge will apply to all overnight stays, including Scottish residents, for bookings made after October 1, 2025.
Portugal – €2.00 per day
Portugal’s tourist tax applies to 13 major cities, including Lisbon and Porto. From April to October, visitors will need to pay €2.00 per day.
Netherlands – 12.5% of overnight stay
In Amsterdam, the tourist tax has increased to 12.5% of your overnight hotel rate. Other Dutch cities have also imposed similar charges, so it’s important to check local rates when booking your trip.
France – up to €11.38 per night
In France, tourist tax rates vary by accommodation type. For five-star hotels, the tax can go as high as €11.38 per night, while four-star and three-star hotels charge up to €8.45 and €5.53, respectively, in Paris.
Thailand – 300 THB (£6.86)
Inspired by Europe’s success with tourist taxes, Thailand plans to introduce a 300 THB (around £6.86) fee for arriving tourists by plane, starting in mid-2025.
Be sure to check the local tax rates of your destination so you’re not surprised by unexpected costs on your next holiday. These taxes are becoming more common as countries seek to manage tourism and invest in infrastructure.
