Malta U-21, under new coach Davide Mazzotta, kicked off their new era with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Estonia in a friendly, setting the stage for their upcoming European Championship qualifiers.

Mazzotta, previously in charge of the senior squad, deployed a familiar three-man backline mirrored by the senior team, emphasising continuity across all age groups.

From the outset, Estonia asserted dominance in possession while Malta opted for a structured mid-block press, compacting their lines and probing through occasional counterattacks.

Andy Borg nearly broke the deadlock early with a powerful strike, deftly parried by Estonia’s keeper amidst their initial dominance.

Estonia’s persistence paid off when Karel Mustmaa, showcasing his Benfica pedigree, darted through Malta’s defence to score from a tight angle, marking a notable breakthrough.

However, Malta responded swiftly as Keyon Ewurum nodded in from a corner, showcasing their resilience and tactical discipline under pressure.

The match unfolded with both sides exchanging chances – Estonia’s Mustmaa rattled the woodwork with another fierce effort, testing Malta’s defensive resolve.

Ramol Sillamaa and Rommi Siht kept Hugo Sacco alert with long-range attempts, while Alfie Bridgman forced Estonia’s keeper into action with a well-placed shot.

The halftime interval saw Malta inject fresh energy with three substitutions, including Isaiah Chukunyere and Daniel Letherby, aiming to shift momentum.

The second half witnessed Oskar Hoimm’s close miss and numerous changes from both teams, affecting the match’s tempo.

Estonia intensified their push in the latter stages, threatening Malta’s goal with Karel Eerme missing a golden opportunity.

In response, Malta pressed forward, with Zak Barbara’s freekick well-handled by Estonia’s goalkeeper.

Kian Leonardi’s late chance to snatch victory went begging, leaving the scoreline level at full time.
