Most Scots back nuclear weapons according to new poll

  1. >The survey, commissioned by Scotland in Union, shows that nearly half (47%) of respondents believe Scotland is safer and has more global influence within the UK, compared to 35% who think the country would be more secure if independent.

    >At a time of increasing international instability, the poll also reveals that a clear majority (56%) support retaining the UK’s nuclear deterrent, Trident, while just 22% oppose it.

I’m actually a little surprised to see that the figure for safer and more global influence as part of the UK does not exceed 50% — in the current climate, I tend to think that’s one of the better arguments for the union.

  2. Basically every country is now scrambling to get nuclear weapons now including most of Europe

  3. A survey by Scotland in Union, is like a survey by Boris Johnson on parties in lockdown.

  4. Was there an option for *c.) Fuck it, against nukes on principle alone.*

  5. Scotland in Union? Immediately a laughable poll that should not be taken seriously.

  6. What a joke. A survey of how many ?? I would guess at 100 members, oops I mean independent Scot’s surveyed said ??? Let’s go to a Boris party !!!!

  7. This is fucking absurd. As if asking Scotland in Union supporters is the equivalent of the opinion of Scotland. That lot are ashamed to be Scottish.

  8. Sad little unionists bootlickers might but not true Scots

  9. My only surprise is the support, though a majority, isn’t larger.  Worlds’ a dangerous place.

  10. Problem is that Trident is built by (therefore probably controlled by) the US Americans and haven’t had a successful test firing in over a decade.

    2012: successful test

    2016: failed test

    2024: failed test

The submarines and the warheads are British made, but the actual missle system for delivering the warhead is 100% US.

  11. Where did you take this poll? Faslane naval base??? 😂😂😂😂

  12. So a plurality believes the UK is a safer option. Not exactly a ringing endorsement given everything.

  13. Obviously the only way forward is for Scotland to have its own independent nuclear deterrent. Especially to protect us from Prime Minister Farage.

  14. Scotland in Union are notorious for loaded questions – and I would argue that calling nuclear weapons the ‘UK’s independent nuclear deterrent’ – as they have done in the headline question – is not going to give the most accurate results

  15. Ah but did you ask if they should be used on the English?

  16. This point seems to have to really come to the fore on Reddit in recent weeks. I suppose a shaky relationship with America makes people nervous.

I wonder what makes people feel safer about having nuclear weapons. In what scenario do we use them? When Russia invades one it’s European neighbours? When it lands it’s first troops on Scottish soil? Once they’ve sacked Perth? I don’t see us using them in those circumstances and I don’t really believe they’re the only reason we aren’t currently speaking Russian.

Not convinced that even if we did launch them that they wouldn’t just land in Greenock anyway.

  17. 100% back it. Back in the pre-2014 Scottish independence referendum era I got sucked into the SNP “Bairns not bombs” mantra and was heavily against Trident. Then Russia invaded Crimea and that opinion swiftly changed. Ukraine gave up their nukes in 1994 based on assurance from UK and US that they would be protected. Now look where they are. It’s a hypothetical, but do you think Ukraine would have been invaded if they still possessed nuclear weapons? I doubt it.

Yes it’s expensive to build and maintain, but put it context. Trident and our at sea deterrent is about £3billion per year. The capital cost of building the new infrastructure is about £30billion. Compare that to HS2 where we spaffed £30billion up the wall for half a train line. And £3billion a year sounds a lot, but if you apply the ‘bairns not bombs’ mantra, there’s 14million kids in the UK, so cutting trident is £215 quid a head. Hardly life changing sums in exchange for the nations ultimate last line of defence.

  18. Of all the nations on Earth that could possess a nuclear weapon, I think we are one of the more trustworthy ones.

  19. I’m in favour of a Scottish nuclear arsenal. Launch code changes every day but is always “you’re gettin’ chibbed ya cunt”.
