Italy urges Europe to use all farming land to reduce reliance on Russian grain

  1. France has a lot of unused arable land but even if we were actively trying to put it to good use it’s not going to produce grain for the next harvest season.

  2. Problem is, there is a fertilizer shortage as well and the costs of fertilizers have gone through the roof. Also if biofuel was to be used for energy as some have proposed, that would take fertilizers away from where it’s urgently needed, to feed people.

There are no easy solutions. Well, there is one that can work and that is restarting coal plants, but that won’t sit well with most people until they realize how close to the brink we are.

  3. I know you won’t want to hear this but..

For the past 30+ years China has been buying up faming land or making agreements all around the world to farm land so they can be self sufficient.

Meanwhile for the past 50+ years the EU have been paying farmers to set land aside and not to produce in order to keep the prices high, remember the butter mountain and wine lakes of old?

  4. AND we should use GMO. Should overcome the strong prejudices in our country. Also the stupid palm oil bias.
