Istanbul court jails 7 journalists as protesters fill streets • FRANCE 24 English

Thousands of students chanting angry slogans hit the streets of Istanbul on Tuesday as a court jailed an AFP journalist and six others for covering the biggest protests to hit Turkey in over a decade. The demonstrations erupted after the arrest of the mayor of Istanbul, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s main political rival, in a crackdown that has seen more than 1,400 people arrested, including 11 Turkish journalists. FRANCE 24’s Jasper Mortimer reports from Ankara.

  1. The thief, liar, enemy of the republic, Erdogan, Erdogan has been losing the elections for years, but she was saying that she won the elections by stealing votes by building apartments on empty lots, by stealing and destroying votes with the help of the police and soldiers, by attacking the people, and also by getting the support of Russia, well, you know what Russia can do.

  2. Western countries should condemn Erdogan. He is a ruthless anti-democratic figure with highly corrupt.
He violated human rights countless times. Turkish people hate him.

  3. Yavaş can't win. He has a fashist background and will never be elected by the kurds. Imamoglu on the other hand was a candidate for all. That's why he is in jail now

  4. Democracy is about more than just holding elections every four years. It does not mean granting a blank check to those in power, allowing them to do as they please until the next vote. On the contrary, democracy is the continuous presence of the people—their right to hold leaders accountable. It means saying: We are here, and if you spend four years serving only your own inner circle instead of the nation and its people, we have the right to respond.
Arresting opposition members without justification, imprisoning them without due process—this is not democracy; it is the hallmark of an authoritarian regime. And this government has embraced such a disgraceful approach. Now, as the time has come for them to leave, they refuse to acknowledge it.

  5. Students are not marching for democracy; they are marching for a liar who has deceived them. Unfortunately, this is the truth

  6. The Turkish people have a wonderful political proverb: "When a clown moves into the palace, he doesn't become a king, the palace becomes a circus.".

  7. What a cheek to replace Mayors with AKP people. Been doing it for years all over the country . Such authoritarian dictatorial behavior.
Why has he not been ousted yet.

  8. Full support and solidarity to our neighbours from Georgia! 🇬🇪 We've been fighting for the same cause for months now. The plague of authoritarianism and darkness shouldn't be allowed to spread! 💪

  9. In the Middle East there are millions of crooks like Erdogan who will use religion to rob the people. One of them leaving will not change anything. It is not important who goes, but who comes

  10. Journalists, students and even dissident business people are either arrested or put on trial. If you are not a political Islamist, you have no right to speak.

  11. Erdogan: " I am against this notion all 'Turkey' have democratic rights to be served on American dining table during thank-giving festival, they should be reminded Turkiye interests will be better served under my Ottoman Empire goal and with a prolong Islamic rules . "
