  1. The chart further down showing the fraud is barely 2% of cases is really telling.

  2. Have to agree with this. I know personally of an 18 year old lad (friend of one of my apprentices) who got a brand new car because of depression. In what world is that fair? Not a 20 year old car restored or a suitable sized car to help him get around – a brand new one. He was trained in how to claim it via TikTok. Come on, that’s why people are fed up. Nobody wants to kick down, but at the same time the system is being played

  3. Ah, all the flash brand new German hatchbacks being raced around the uni near home (and later parked with blue badges) finally make sense.

  4. It’s these people that piss me off, not the genuine claimants. I’m from a council estate and it was common knowledge how to play the system and nearly everyone was on benefits.

Whereas, my partner and I have worked since we were both 16 but if I was off sick we wouldn’t be entitled to any UC etc. Country is fucked

  5. 11,000 cases since 2022 seems like a minuscule amount. Why are people in the comments holding this up as evidence of widespread fraud?

  6. My aunts neighbours friends fathers cousin managed to walk into the dole office and come out with keys to a brand new BMW because he had a headache that day. Just unbelievable really.

Edit: probably should include the /s since it really is hard to distinguish now.

  7. I’m sure stories like this will only help disabled people find jobs rather than demonise them in the minds of potential employers who aren’t exactly chomping at the bit to hire them anyway. Great direction this country is moving in, plunge the most vulnerable into poverty and kick them while they’re down there while we’re at it so nobody feels too bad about it.

  8. It’s fair to say we all know someone who is taking the piss either with blue badge, mobility car or payments for illnesses/disabilities that are exaggerated. So that amounts to a lot of money that is going to the wrong people ,which is the problem, but the ones who require it most tend not to be adept at claiming so they’ll probably lose out.

Whole system needs a kick up the arse.

  9. I mean, how are we defining “abusing the system” here?

My 18yo foster brother has a car (nothing fancy) through the motability scheme, related to SEN and (professionally diagnosed) autism. Personally I think that’s excessive, but if the system provides for it, why would you not claim it? (He also lives six miles from the nearest bus stop, so he needs access to a vehicle to get anywhere, but I don’t think living in the arse end of nowhere is among the qualifying criteria.)

My dad, who fosters him and helped him through the application process, thinks I also have autism and suggested I go and get diagnosed and claim the same and similar benefits. I told him I’m not really comfortable using the system like that; his response is that that’s what the system is there for. I don’t know.

  10. The vast majority of the individuals in these comments are crabs in a bucket, they’ve never had a useful original thought their entire lives.

  11. > The company now accounts for one in five of all new cars bought in the UK

The mobility scheme is a pillar of the French and German motor industries.

  12. Saw an interview with an ex fraud investigator and this is rampant, he said lots use the car for businesses like uber driving and deliveries etc

  13. I can’t believe this! According to reddit, benefit abuse is more or less impossible

    /s

  14. Good, I know 2 people who scammed their way to a free car.

  15. Just right, there are far too many people getting these cars when they haven’t the slightest need for them!

  16. Can the commenters here start working for Capita and catch these people? Everyone seems to know so much about the system.

If you know dozens of people who are taking the piss then report them, otherwise you’re making life harder for the people who genuinely need it that you claim to care about.

  17. Genuine question, but how does someone with mental health issues even qualify for a mobility car? I have severe mobility issues, and I can’t even get a blue badge, let alone a mobility care. It’s impossible to claim anything.

A mobility vehicle should only apply to those who get awarded the points in the mobility section of things like PIP.

  18. A few round by me in social housing take the absolute piss. I go for a walk at lunch on my break, wfh, and they are always partying it up. I know them, before anyone sais they may be on their lunch break, and they make lots of noise and do not work. They all have brand new SUV’s.

  19. I know someone who is physically disabled and can’t drive but they are provided with a lovely new car every few years. The parents drive them about occasionally but live around 15-20 miles away

  20. Let’s give a round of applause for all the hard working people who go to work everyday so they can support people that don’t.

  21. This country is fucked. The system has been abused by scroungers to such a point that we’re going to destroy it and fuck over truly desperate people.

  22. The same commenters rn be going crazy when the pension cuts come

  23. Lol and everyone was defending moterbility to the 9th degree .

When you know 3 people personally who abuse it , really doesnt sit well

  24. None of this is news, the article even states it’s since 2022. The rules have always been in place to revoke the benefit if they break the rules, this isn’t some brand new repercussion, there’s an agreement between the company and the leaser and if they break the agreement the car is removed.

  25. Some situations where a person is eligible but does not want a car. The person gets the car for a relative and pays them back the money. Can get VAT off the lease and so cheaper. Can also put multiple people on the insurance. In some cases they put a tracker on to stop the fraud. But if 50% of all new cars in Northern Ireland recently was purchased through the mobility scheme I’d suggest a tracker in every car.

  26. So the Tories were handing out taxpayer funded cars to freeloaders???

That doesn’t compute, I thought the Tories didn’t ‘spend other people’s money’?

  27. Meanwhile I had to get rid of my car because I just could not afford it and all the expenses that comes with it but yet I know people that haven’t worked their whole life driving around in a brand new Kia or Merc or BMW. I really don’t care if that money comes out of their benefits they’re still able to not work and have nice things. Meanwhile my house is full of damp, traders and repair men rip me off, had to get rid of my car the list goes on. While John blaggins over here is tucking into his Chinese takeaway because he’s got the munchies from all the weed they smoke all day, watching Netflix on his 52 inch TV with the heating on while I’m tucking into my rice and can of tuna sitting under my heated throw in a damp filled room while I wonder how I’m going to find the money and someone reliable to fix my damp…while working all kinds of hours just to get by It makes you really bitter and angry. But at least I’m a homeowner and have a job and my health right guys??? Yeah right…

  28. The whole point in the mobility allowance is to help the claimant with getting around and transportation. And Motability scheme is run by a CHARITY.
It’s sad to see people suggesting that disabled people shouldn’t be allowed to use the mobility allowance on precisely what it’s intended for. Such discrimination and jealousy arguing that disabled who have been assessed to have significant struggles shouldn’t be allowed access to a car that meets their needs through a charity.
So many people who know someone who’s mums friends sisters babysitters nephew who’s allegedly committing fraud. Unless you are privy to the most intimate details of someone’s daily living you have no right to guess or presume what disabilities and struggles they may or may not have. You are not and will never be them and the lack of compassion is baffling, as well as the reluctance to actually learn about and understand the scheme before slating it.
Count your blessings if you are able bodied and mentally sound, instead of ragging on those who have significant struggles and who have to work harder to overcome these struggles every day. Be thankful if you are not one of them.

  29. Anyone else notice the ramp up of articles attacking people on benefits in some way in an attempt to make people less sympathetic about the cuts?

This kind of thing obviously happens but it’s just funny how articles like this are now popping up with regularity lately, because average joe will just read the title and go “those bloody benefit spongers! Look at that! Loads of them are taking the piss!”

  30. > A Department for Work and Pensions spokesperson said the scheme “comes at no additional cost to the taxpayer. People claiming benefits such as PIP must sacrifice some of their existing payments to lease a car.”

If they’re leasing the car, why the hell should anyone care how/when/where they use it?

  31. Paywall, so I have no idea what this is about.

Motability is indirectly funded (you choose to pay for PIP you have) so what is being described here?
