  1. I read somewhere that Candians to USA is a 20 billion $ tourism industry windfall. This will hurt them.

  2. That’s just “booked” travel like flights and hotels. I’d be curious to see what the impact is on “I’m just gonna pop down to Fargo for the weekend” trips.

  3. Don’t blame them- why visit somewhere where tourists from are being detained, getting threats of annexation and having unfair tariffs imposed by them?

  4. I’m one of them, used to visit the US multiple times a year. Going to take my tourist dollars elsewhere until this 51st state bullshit ends.

  5. And a lot of European countries are putting some warnings on the US as well. MAGA seems to think we will be totally fine if we’re isolated and bullying everyone. The FO stage is just starting.

  6. Myrtle Beach, Virginia, Florida, Cape Cod, just some place where on the east coast Canadians use to go during summer and school vacations. Those place will feel it hard.

  7. May this disproportionately hit MAGA strongholds. Who wants to visit Florida anyway?

  8. No more trips to Watertown NY for me. I used to go once a month ish. My absence won’t cripple any economies but if lots of my Canadian peeps are doing the same, it will hurt American border towns noticeably.

  9. Let’s get those numbers up, these are rookie numbers! Let’s see 99.9% and then we can celebrate

  10. Reminder that Canadian tourists spend $20B/yr and support 140,000 US jobs

E: or rather, they did. Not anymore.

  11. The article notes a **70% drop in Canada->US flight bookings**, not necessarily a 70% drop in travel as it doesn’t account for overland or existing booked travel.

According to [US Travel](https://www.ustravel.org/press/potential-results-decline-canadian-travel-united-states) a month ago, a 10% drop in Canadian visits (i.e. a drop of 2,000,000 visits) to the US is estimated to result in 14,000 job losses and a loss of $2.1B.

However, US Travel also notes in a separate article that Winter 2025 (Jan-Mar) was growing. I would posit that this is buoyed by travel bookings that were already made prior to the tariffs & annexation/invasion threats, in addition to US Travel estimating 2025 and 2026 will bring increased travel to the US due to events such as FIFA (***2026***) and the Olympics (***2028***) being located in the US.

The more cynical side of me assumes the ***2028*** Olympics will have overtones very similar to [one that happened in the past.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1936_Summer_Olympics)

***Edits above***; shoutout to u/TheLarix for keeping me accurate 🙂

***Edit 2***: and shoutout to u/omygashi

Note: apparently I need more or less coffee. Experimentation ongoing to see if more helps.

  12. I was planning a huge trip to California, would have spent a month down there. Cancelled everything and am going to Japan instead. I’m a pissed off Canadian and will likely never step foot in the US again.

  13. Tourism is a $2.4 TRILLION industry in the United States. Lack of tourism will be felt keenly this summer.

  14. Who wants to go somewhere that you can be snatched off the street by ICE thugs and vanished to a prison camp in El Salvador with no due process? So many great places to go, the USA is no longer a good choice to travel to.

  15. A friend and former colleague works for a large company that has offices around the world, including Canada and the US. He sent a member of his team from Toronto to a US office for 2 weeks of training. This is a regular practice, this same company had run this same training for their employees from around the world dozens of times. He was sent with exactly the same paperwork that had always been sufficient.

This poor guy was held in secondary inspection for a day and then denied entry. The border agents were just somehow sure that he was up to no good, going to do something other than training.

When more stories like this get out, business travel to the US that would have previously been considered routine and essential is going to be cancelled. It’s not just going to be rescheduled vacations, and it’s not just going to be out of a sense of national pride or principle. There are clear, pragmatic reasons to avoid crossing the Canada-US border as much as possible now.

  16. Yeah, because the Americans are being complete assholes right now.

  17. We cancelled our trip to Vegas. I highly doubt we will ever set foot in America ever again.

  18. Yup. Golf trip to Michigan this year will be to Niagara instead.

  19. Already cancelled both of my planned trips to the US this summer.

  20. We live in Canada close to the BC/ Washington border and go down to Bellingham every couple of months with NEXUS. We will not be going down at all anymore. It’s not much but every trip we would spend around $500 USD in groceries, clothes restaurants and gas. They were daytrips so there was no hotel or AirBNB bookings involved.

We also cancelled a family road trip down to Oregon. I would have been spending between $4 to $5K USD Again not a huge amount but if enough of us are doing the same , it’s going to add up.

  21. Tourism in USA is a huge business and Canada was in large part the main source

    FAFO 🤷‍♂️

  22. Out of curiosity, for all those chronically apologizing Americans, if Trump invades a foreign nation what’s the plan? Because if I have to get bombed and apologized too I might actually lose my mind.

Thank you for your fond wishes but seriously, deep in your souls, does the plan change at all if you guys pull the trigger on a full blown dictatorship?

Where is the spirit of defiance and defence of freedom? How could a dictatorship not be the end stage of capitalism I guess.

Good job Canada. You can get this number higher. Americans mean business, they want us on our knees. Literally half of them are either apathetic or in support of our destruction.

Americans, please stop twisting your nips and saying harder daddy. Don’t worry, we got you. We are going to make it hurt and if you come here and take our shit your country won’t know peace for generations.

  23. Based on the information available, particularly from reports by Tourism Economics, the U.S. tourism sector is projected to face significant financial losses in 2025. Here’s a summary of the key findings:

    * **Projected Loss:**
    * The U.S. tourism industry could lose up to **$64 billion** in 2025.
    * **Factors Contributing to the Loss:**
    * Decline in international and domestic travel.
    * I**mpact of the Trump administration’s policies, including trade wars and stricter immigration measures.**
    * A stronger U.S. dollar, which may deter foreign visitors.
    * reduced visitor expenditures.
    * **Specific Impacts:**
    * A projected 5.1% decline in foreign visitor arrivals.
    * A projected 10.9% drop in visitor expenditures, equaling around a 18 billion dollar loss.

  24. American border agent > Do you have anti-Trump things on your phone?

I’m Canadian, of course i fucking do!

  25. Trump is a fool… he has no concept of the ripple effect this has on the US economy. Consider this isn’t a Canada-exclusive trend. People are pissed off and it will take a long time for people to shift back. People are discovering new destinations which will become the go-to in future travels. Good time to short airlines, casinos, cruise-lines and resorts based in the US.

  26. As an American leftist who had planned to take both of our vacations in Canada this year … I’m actually more concerned about getting BACK into the US. My name is so common it has resulted in delays more than half the times I have come back into the US … can only imagine if they decided to search my online presence regarding the current regime (suffice to say I haven’t been a fan since the 80s)

  27. Let’s remember to ask DeSantis about Canadian travellers in Oct or so. Cocky MFer said numbers hadn’t dropped and he was looking at data from before the tariff and 51st state talking points really took off.

  28. I’m still going to Canada this summer for wine tasting 🍷

  29. 20 million trips to the US from Canadian in 2024, the US biggest visitor, Canada only has about 40 million people, Mexico is the next biggest visitor with 14 million.

the US Travel is about to take a serious hit this summer.

  30. Was going to see my relatives in Las Vegas. I chose to fly to Paris later this year.

  31. Speaking as a US citizen and the sane portion who voted against Trump, you can get those numbers even higher Canada. Please do.

  32. No point of travelling to a place where you’re not welcome and you could be, “disappeared”.

  33. **”likely due to ongoing uncertainty surrounding the broader trade dispute.”**

What is more likey is that Canadians are moving away from travel due to the fact that he declarted

    1. Economic war with the goal of annexation
    2. Says our country and border is not a real
    3. Talks about our sovereignty like a rapist eying prey
    4. People are getting detained

  34. I lived there for years and will definitely be postponing any further US trips. I will be encouraging my American friends to come here to visit.

I don’t know the stats on this but I doubt many Trumpists come to Canada. Too much risk of turning gay. Or worse: socialist.

  35. Wife and I are Canadian and had an Alaskan cruise booked for 2026; it’s our 10th anniversary and the original one we booked in 2019 was cancelled due to COVID.
We’ve since cancelled the vacation and switched it to a Norweign Fjord one instead. Having used to work in the US under a TN visa and then hearing the story about the Canadian woman that was detained for a previously declined TN visa made me realize I dont want to take any chances with something similar.

  36. Those are rookie numbers. Let’s keep working to bring that number down even further! Elbows up 🇨🇦
