To put it mildly, its been a complete shitshow by NHS Highland. Over the last few years the number of vascular surgeons has dwindled from 3 to just Mr Wolf and he has very rightly resigned. He was notorious for basically never leaving the hospital but you cannot run a 24/7 service safely with just one or two surgeons, even with as dedicated a surgeon as him. NHS Highland has had plenty of time to either hire more surgeons or plan for the inevitable (all surgeons resigning) and neither has happened.
So here we are. To my knowledge no other health board will take vascular patients so you’re shit out of luck if you’re one of them. Leg going ischaemic (lack of blood flow) and causing you incredible pain? Too bad, no one is going to try to salvage it with a graft or bypass; wait till its bad enough so another surgeon will amputate. Vascular emergency like a ruptured aneurysm? Palliate or possibly die on transfer, if one can even be arranged.
