He doesn’t have a clue. He said that Ireland suddenly had the pharma. Big American Pharma has been in Ireland since the sixties. In the present day, Trump doesn’t understand it is their way into the EU, using an English speaking country with a skilled workforce.
It all just proves Trump is more reality TV businessman than actual businessman.
Very small, just like his hands
Can they make all that stuff themselves? Have they factories and materials and workers ready to go?
Because, if not, they’re just making it more expensive for themselves in the short to medium term
I wonder how many of his own citizens this will kill?
Viagra is about to cost a lot more in the US. Traitor trumps going to hear about that on the golf course!
Anyways, Americans don’t have the education to work in pharma, nothing is going to change.
Trump wishes he’s a cute hoor but he’s a bleedin tic
Doesn’t matter how “Smart” Ireland is in appeassing this clown. Another month and he would throw away anything he agreed and come back with more demands. It’s what bullies do.
As always, another fantastic business move from a complete genius. Is it dementia, lads or is he just that fucking dumb?
EU just imposes matching tariffs and it makes no financial sense for these companies to move back. ‘Most’ of their market isn’t in the US.
the fat gimp
Remember that rainy day fund we were all complaining about? We’ll need it.
It will have sizable impact. Struggle to see how big investment decisions into Ireland will happen under this cloud.
We need a tariff on golf-course ownership. Charge per ball-hit. That will really hit him in the balls.
Ok so forgive me if I’m wrong since my knowledge of the American health market is limited but isn’t this essentially inconsequential? They have never been shy about upchanging for medication. Especially in hospitals where their agreements with insurance companies write off most of the cost. They obviously have room to incorporate the tax in current costs but I imagine it will just be a good excuse for them to squeeze more money out of the system. Now that I think about it…almost seems like a win for pharmaceutical companies?
Drug dealers are going to absolutely love these tariffs. They can start moving viagra(and drugs like them) from Canada and Mexico into the USA and make a big profit.
Unless there are already factories in America making the products manufactured in Ireland, all this is going to do is make the pharmaceuticals more expensive for Americans and Americans only. Setting up a new factory for pharmaceutical production is a very long and expensive process so most pharma companies are just going to sit tight and wait until he is out of office. They’ll still be making money (turns out people NEED medicines) so they won’t care.
Would be way too expensive to relocate everything for a 4-year term POTUS. I’m boycotting all US goods anyways though since they’re snatching people off the streets with no due process and literally sending them to international prisons, shaving their heads, and giving them numbers.
This is really dumb because you can’t just move back pharma plants the way you could with say, a tech company. And you can’t just not buy medicine.
Will these tarrifs actually affect jobs in Ireland or is it only a case of our GDP lowering because if so, GDP was never an accurate measure of the average worker’s quality of life anyway.
If things we manufacture in factories here are tarriffed then that will make those physical items more expensive to buy for Americans thus sales suffer and i can see jobs being lost.
But if pharmaceutical products are being moved through here or profits are being declared here to avail of tax breaks without any substantial workforce, then the tarrifs reduce the multinational’s profits but don’t necessarily hit jobs here.
I don’t know if a reduced GDP does anything bad to our economy if that reduction was entirely based on external corporations and few if any jobs are lost.
Can someone with knowledge educate me?
Can someone smarter than me explain how pharmaceutical tariffs work? Are Americans not going to buy medication made here if the price goes up? I didn’t think there was a large competitor filled market for this type of business.
Tariffs will do nothing but drive up prices for consumers, there should be no Tariffs on USA products and no Tariffs on EU products.
The less taxation the better.
US medicine prices are already nuts. People are hardly going to stop taking medication. Also, a lot of the stuff made here is for Europe as well.
Comments on these articles must prove that people know very little about tech transfers and pharma/biopharma production
Ireland has been very canny in building its wealth over the last while. But as the global neo-liberal order faulters, I want to see Ireland not just being a skillful player. Like Japanese capitalists, and their canny ability to play the game- I think we’ve earned a seat at the big boys table. I would like to see Ireland setting the field in coming years, not just being one of the sharpest players on the field
He has lost his ‘hard on’ for Ireland. (Viagra pun for those that don’t get it) 😂
Assuming the orange gobshite doesn’t go for a power grab and extend the term limit to his presidency we are talking about 4 years, building the infrastructure to house/support pharma / biopharma manufacture takes time, tech transfers take time, changing of supply chain takes time, changing of raw materials for actives takes time, studies and regulatory submissions. For him to think that multi billion dollar highly regulated companies won’t risk assess this political mess is beyond stupid, bringing a drug to market can take a decade, 4 years is nothing to them. If anything it may increase the costs for everyday people in the states to get medication, companies in Europe will happily sell to every other nation in the interim and pass on the hit to the customer when necessary. Not to mention that its already 700$ for some brands of insulin in the states so there will come a breaking point.
“Let’s elect a CEO and run our country like a business”
And of course thick as shit yanks choose a man who managed to run a casino into the ground in Las Vegas.
On the bright side Trump has abolished the US federal department of education so the locals will be spared even more awareness of just how dumb they really are.
Ignorance is bliss eh ?
Would they just wait it out the 4 years until he’s out of office? I have no idea about this industry whatsoever.
Trump has been namechecking us a lot. If he finds that tariffs don’t immediately bring the pharma industry running back to the US, we’ll start getting the Greenland treatment.
Hell no, we’re not 52.
Time for all those people to earn the *Irish* in Irish-American.
This gowl can talk out of one side of his mouth saying “I love the Irish” … But then on the other side issue tariffs in an effort to destroy our pharma industry.
If 2.5% of USA are jewish, and can completely capture US foreign policy to serve the interests of Israel – no matter the costs in terms of human suffering and genocide …
Then surely 9.5% of the US population (Irish heritage) can organise and pressure their government to back the fuck off Ireland ?
This is where Irish politicians and dignitaries do the country a disservice when they show up to the Paddy’s day dog & pony show at the White House, all smiles and sycophantic praise.
That’s not how you mobilise the Irish-Americans, that’s how you keep them quiet – and it’s exactly why the White House has these events in the first place.
The Israelis are not the slightest bit shy about giving out stink about US governance, politicians, senators, law makers – you name it. And that’s how they get results.
He things he is a cute hoot but he is actually and acute gobshite.

Lets see how long Trump can keep his tariffs on…
