We don’t have an equivalent for the system and our defense industry isn’t producing fast enough. I would like for Dassault to arm every country but alas.

Buddy, you guys are like 2 years away from electing Le Pen, and then all those nuclear security promises are worthless anyway. Yes we need to become more independent, but let’s not pretend as if we actually had the option to just ditch the US within the next 5 years. We’d just do the same mistake twice, naively trusting France with our security, just as we did with the US.

When Germany starts manufacturing F-35 and parts, then America couldn’t really use the “kill switch” as the parts for maintenance would keep on flowing, and let’s not forget that france could do a 180 in about 2 years

In my opinion maybe we should hedge. On the one hand the F-35 are necessary for the us nuclear weapons on the other hand there is a substantial (in my opinion very high) risk for this being useless and the with further conflict with the US the F-35 would even become a liability, even though I don’t believe they have a explicit Kill switch. However the tactical nuclear weapons of the US are currently without alternative. The nuclear weapon arsenal of the UK and of France are not designed for certain things. Without tactical nuclear weapons Russia can basically just use some small scale tactical nuclear weapons to effortlessly march through eastern Europe and with the nuclear weapons of France we can only push them back basically at the cost of blowing up those countries at a large scale. So while there remains even the smallest hope in our relations with the us on a defense level there might be value in having some F-35 for this job. Of course I would also advocate for us Germans to develop these tactical nuclear weapons to complement the french arsenal, but how fast this could be done and also considering the political feasibility is uncertain.

In principle, I am really in favour of most defence spending being settled within Europe, but unfortunately there is no alternative when it comes to aircraft. Hopefully that will change with the next generation.
Germany has very specific requirements and the aircraft, such as the fact that the first ones have to be delivered within the 20s, as our Tornados ‘expire’ in 2030. At the same time, they **must** be capable of nuclear sharing with US bombs.

A lot of anti-French sentiment in these comments (which sits right for this sub, I agree) but it reveals a more profound problem of having no one to rely on.
France’s nuclear weapons and few Rafales, Sweden’s Gripens, Eurofighters… it’s not much, but it’s all we have. Ask yourselves first why, before defaulting to buying F35 from a country that does its best to prove they’re no more allies. The first best time to build an independent defense was 20 years ago, the second next time is now.

Well Pierre, see: the reason we bought F-35 was because we have nuclear sharing with the US.
The A-bombs would have been carried by our Tornados, but those “expire” in the 2030s.
No French jet is rated to carry American A-bombs.
And yes, you can make the argument that if the US turns against us, then the jets would be useless, but so would be the American A-bombs, so we might as well have American jets carry those, since we don’t have French A-bombs available to us.
