TotalEnergies announced on Thursday its intention to sell more liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the coming years, which would probably increase indirect CO2 emissions, but not overall emissions.
In its annual sustainability report, the French oil giant says it will have emitted a total of 376 million tonnes (Mt) of CO2 equivalent in 2024, including 342 Mt of indirect emissions known as Scope 3, resulting from the combustion of fuels sold to customers.
This represents a slight decrease on the 386 Mt CO2 equivalent of emissions in 2023.
For 2025, TotalEnergies has lowered its emissions targets, particularly for methane, to -60% compared with 2015, compared with -50% previously.
