It’s a sad time in history. The greatest Alliance ever in the world between two countries is gone and might never come back to where it was. Both countries just got a lot weaker. Thanks Trump.
Next time California is burning down and they ask Canada for water bombers Canada should ask them where there’s are. Or when another Hurricane trashes a city they can go ask Russia and NK for help.
Sucks for the people that didn’t ask for this but that’s still your president and represents you.
EDIT: Yes we need to help eachother, but I can’t see why Canada should lift a finger to help a country who’s Tsar is saying they will conquer us and is currently waging economic warfare on us. Sorry Americans either need to take to the streets in a general strike or deal with it, this is insanity.
Our crazy rapist neighbour isn’t worth keeping in touch with. Isolate them like they want. Hope we are working on NORAD.
What’s crazy is that *no matter what* happens with this senile pos his fans will clap and say it’s all part of the plan. Doesn’t matter what happens, it’s supposed to happen. 4d chess and so on. Tribalism at it’s most fear mongering.
Dude’s doing his damnedest to weaken this country. Whether it’s on purpose or if he really can’t comprehend that there *are* actual negative consequences to these actions. You’re not speaking in a vacuum here after all.
Having the military and industrial might that we have *isn’t* the whole package that’s kept us at the top since WW2. Having healthy relationships with multiple wealthy and influential countries that *benefit* from our station is a major part of that.
If all you have is the weapons and the world hates you then you’re just the Soviet Union, destined to fall.
I’m in full support of Canada on this
As this is going, I fear the future is going to resemble The Handmaid’s Tale depiction.
We should get the old gang back together (CANZUK) and then bring that organisation together with the EU. Who needs America.
🇨🇦 🇬🇧 🇦🇺 🇳🇿 + 🇪🇺 = 💪
TBH , stronger self reliant Canada is a net positive for Humanity as a whole.

It’s not over because of the tariffs. We e argued about trade plenty of times. I wish journalists would stop writing obtuse headlines like this.
It’s “over”, because the USA is insulting the leader of Canada by calling him a governor, and insulting the entire country by saying it “only makes sense as the 51st state”. The U.S. is directly and seriously making threats to Canada’s autonomy as a country. That’s a much bigger deal than a freaking tariff dispute.
Insane what the Trump administration has managed to do in the past few months.
Decades of friendship and trust gone like that.
Trump really is making america great for himself in russia.
Gah. This is so fucking stupid. Canada was arguably America’s staunchest ally until literally less than 100 days ago.
At least one western leader “gets it”. Every other one still seems to be attempting appeasement as a policy. I suspect it will be Carney, assuming he and his political party win the national election in April, that leads the EU and other nations on a new path. He certainly has the credentials, experience and force of personality and intellect to do such. This is a man who knows how to command a ship and steer it in a storm, and has demonstrated that ability many times in the past.
All EU leaders already know him due to his past as Governor of the Bank of England during Brexit and later his tenure as head of the stabilization fund at the IMF. He was against Brexit but his job as BOE governor was to prevent spiraling inflation and he succeeded, admirably.
Agreed. The US is a hostile nation and should be treated as such
Close the border, do it now.
It’s not the tariffs, it’s the annexation threats.
This is what is best for Canada. America has lost its way, we should not go down with them
Putin just eating it up.
I obviously can’t speak for Canada, but my relationship is done.
I lived and worked in California for 5 years. It was amazing.
Then Trump got elected. People who had been friends dumped us. Racial comments became more and more common.
So I left.
And now, it looks like I’ll never be back.
The entire world should completely halt trade with Trump. Make them suffer. Tariffs only apply when there’s a trade involved. Isolate and marginalize the unreliable and aggressive USA.
Sorry Donald, you just don’t have the cards.
…..and Putin is laughing. Everything is going exactly as planned.
I think this is the end of a friendship, but the beginning of something much worse. I really think we need to be prepared for an all-out war between multiple countries. Canada, the US, and a handful of other countries are doing their citizens a favor by heavily implying it. Whether intentional or not, we should be fighting a lot harder to either stop ot it, or start preparing for the worst.
If I’m out of line on this one, please tell me.
I think that with Carney we will be able to remain social liberal with a more centrist-conservative fiscal plan. That suits me just fine.
So far I’ve been impressed with Carneys strong but measured responses to Trumps antagonistic blather.
We are never, never getting back together
Even if the next US government is pro-Atlanticism, pro-West, pro-working-together: we can’t trust that the government *after* that will be like that.
Trump has ruined any soft power the US had – at least amongst liberal western democracies.
As a Brit, it’s really sad to see from afar.
I can only hope Canada and it’s real allies, like the UK and Europe etc are able to forge strong bonds for trade and defence.
Fuck Trump.
Fuck Trump.
We don’t hate Canada. I bought Canadian made Maple Syrup today. Please take a raincheck on our friendship. Maybe 2 years away? Maybe 4?
It’s so hard to believe this is happening. Fuck MAGA forever.
Do Americans realize the damage done will be long term and not solved if the Tariffs are just dropped?
#Never51 #NeverPoilievre
An actual leader would have tried negotiating. Our idiot-in-chief just skipped straight to using economics as weapons. If you poorly explained tariffs to a 10-year-old they could come up with Trump’s strategy.
In my wildest dreams I couldn’t conceive that a US President would be calling for an invasion of Canada and lots of people would be cheering for it.
How did we get here?
WOW
For 2 years PP claimed that Canada was Broken
Carney fixed it in 9 days….
(I am hesitant to say that on the 10th day Carney rested because that sounds too much like Orange Jesus)
Damn right it is!
If the actual President was replaced today and all he has done reversed and put away I still would never look at Americans the same way ever again.
Roughly a third of the country put him there, another did not vote to prevent him from doing everything he has done and the rest are part of a party who pushed aside the most popular candidate ever to push forward a career politician who happened to be part of the big wigs of the party.
I didn’t see the American people for who they are for the longest time but my eyes are open now and I can’t forget what I’ve seen.
And I am fully aware just writing this is putting me at risk should I ever cross the border again which just strengthens my beliefs of how mess up that country is and my resolve not to go back.
I used to think we were friends.
I hate the tariffs but that doesn’t even matter to me. The annexing talk, calling Trudeau Governor, it’s all beyond disrespectful.
There are a lot of US places that I want to visit but I’ll have to think about that again in the 30s.
So the Republicans goal is to ruin friendships and ties with our allies so if Russia moves to take us they don’t help, right?
Based on today and how Carney has taken the reigns as Prime Minister, I am deeply impressed. I like how he told Trump from the get go that he will not speak to him until he respects our sovereignty. And Trump didn’t say a word on it since. Carney didn’t talk to him at all, visiting other leaders instead. Trump must have wanted him to come begging, but Carney meant it.
Carney is 100% right.
It makes me incredibly sad, but Canada needs to plan for a future where we can better stand on our own without the US. We URGENTLY need to build towards greater economic and military independence. It will be expensive, and there will be some hard sacrifices; however, there is no way to get back what we have now lost thanks to Trump. We also need to deepen our relationship with allies in Europe, Australia, etc.
I hate this new reality so much, as someone with family on both sides of the border (like many Canadians). We simply can’t live in denial of that reality, much as a few people would like to. We have to adapt and overcome as best we can.
The question Canadians are having to ask ourselves now is: what are the best ways to build that greater economic and military independence?
What it’s when you play CIV6 without playing the tutorial first is happening before our eyes, turn by turn.
