Ukraine’s independence from the USSR in 1991 offered a chance to end centuries of Russian persecution — through repression, assimilation, and even the total deportation of the Crimean Tatars.
However, in 2014, the Kremlin occupied the peninsula once again, unleashing a new wave of repression against its indigenous people, now threatening the very existence of their identity.
