Usually happens when major companies take advantage of people who don’t know better. There is always this sentiment thrown around that foreigners take jobs Irish wouldn’t do, but personally as an immigrant I wouldn’t work for peanuts either. Pay me a proper wage and I’ll do the ‘less’ desired job.
No generational wealth or family in the country to assist would probably be a big contributor.
This statistic is very similar across the developed world
Economic migrants pay more into the system than the take out due to a host of factors, age (education abroad prior to arrival), fear of being seen to take advantage. No family support.
Imagine moving 5000, 10000 or 15000k to work, you ain’t gunna rock the boat
Developed societies do become a bit more precious….
I worked for 13 years in hospitality in a big Dublin nightclub that is now gone.
we paid well 3/4 euro higher than min wage at time, but during the recession when we had 25% youth unemployment (17% total) and the most educated dole queue in the world and yet we couldn’t get Irish staff.
Are asylum seekers and migrants falling under the same group?
Highly educated people from comfortable backgrounds in their home countries coming here specifically for work more likely to be working than our population that includes the disabled and generational poverty.
Also people on work visas being taken advantage of by the corporations they’re tied to.
Colour me shocked
It really depends where the migrants are from. Research both from Denmark and the Netherlands have shown migrants from the West and have a net-positive contribution while net-contribution for those coming outside of the West is negative.
A report on the factors displacing Irish people would be of more interest. Nothing new under the sun…Flashback: 9/10 soldiers serving in Northern Ireland miss their mum and saveloy sausage. Bless them.
Propaganda
The report also states that migrants are underrepresented politically.
Migrants don’t have political representation in Ireland, but why should they. They are living in Ireland now are they not Irish. Does the political system not represent Irish citizens. If you live in Australia the political system represents Australian interests and why shouldn’t it. Why should it represent the interests of Irish people in Australia. What am I missing here.
