Enough to rattle Erdogan? Jailing of popular challenger sparks Turkey’s biggest protests

Despite bans, beatings and even the use of facial recognition technology to pursue protesters, Turkey’s opposition is out in the streets in its greatest numbers in more than a decade. This comes after the jailing of centre-left opposition leader Ekrem Imamoglu, the popular mayor of Istanbul who’s been charged with corruption and abetting terrorism just as he’s been plebiscited by the CHP to carry the party’s colours in the 2028 presidential election. Will the protesters prevail?

  1. Jesus didn't we learn anything from Putin? Erdogan is not going anywhere. He will jail another 10,000 and shoot 5,000 with no sleep loss. He has the support of the Islamists and that's all he needs

  2. Because they re afraid to loose ''the power'' without any evidence they arrest and send people to jail.Turkish people are reunited against injustice, people have no more trust to justice. We want democraty we want equal justice for everybody we want corrupted people to be juged its our constitutional right to protest.

  3. Dispite the chp meetings , if you check the streets majority of the protesters are Gen Z ..Their ages are 17 to 22 at most..

  4. The age range of these children is between 17-22. There are also citizens who are older. But policemen mostly targeted those students and journalists somehow. They are walking peacefully for democracy with the flag of their country in their hands. The police torture them, detain them with handcuffs behind their backs and keep them waiting like this for hours. They move them to different locations so that their lawyers cannot find out which police station they are taken to. In court, no one gives them the right to speak and a prison sentence is issued in a few minutes. It is so shameful that there are no empty prisons in Istanbul, they are transferred to nearby cities.

  5. Hahahaha I remember the Turkish ppl bragging so much about how great their country is and now look at them😂🤣🤷🏽‍♂️

  6. Free imamoglu! Free political detainees ! Erdogan follows footsteps of Putin and Khamenei by eliminating his opponents on different pretext. Shame on Police

  7. Corrupted mayor of Istanbul detained. He is a dirty thief and immoral person. He was also a puppet of those who are disturbed of Turkiyye's independence.

  8. I think he will be elected again. For the countries safety we need him.
An other leader will come with conflicts.
It is not easy to lead the entire country. He had to do limitations. How else will he keep control over the enemies

  9. For democracy, for rule of law, for freedom of speech, for REPUBLIC! We, Turkish Nation are on the streets to protect our constitutional right to protest, to protect the mayor we elected for Istanbul, to protect our votes, to make sure we can vote again!

He wants to become Putin, but we are not Russian! We will never live under dictatorship! We've been living free since the dawn of time! And we'll always live free until eternity! If not, we will DIE FREE!!!

People and politicians who believe in democracy in EU and USA, stop supporting dictator!

  10. Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he isn’t running for reelection I believe Türkiye’s Elections is around June-July I always kept up with 🇹🇷Türkiye’s Elections

  11. Recep Tayyip Erdogan didn’t managed conquering #YPG #PKK under his Foreign Policies
Only #SDF is the weakest link of all Kurds and Signed A Deal with HTS terrorist leader in Syria 😅

  12. All other Christians wasn’t killed or attacked by #ISIS they ran into the woods and #ISIS told them to come out of the woods and that they wasn’t going to harm them but raise their Taxes

  13. Inflation is not 50 percent, that number is the official figure announced by the government institution, namely Erdogan. Calculations by independent institutions show that the real inflation is at least twice the official figures.
