US threatens to stop funding a Barcelona library over its diversity policies

  1. This is one of my local libraries, stopped by yesterday. I understand the city council will keep funding programs such as involving more girls in studying science and tech, but I certainly hope they take out the gaudy US astronaut figure and all of the other US propaganda.

To wit, the title of the book on the left here made me laugh (pero qué mil años de historia yanqui?) and the book on the right produced certain disgust.

Edit: It’s true that the headline isn’t very well worded – the US partially funds one program within the library, not the library itself, which the headline could give to understand.

  2. Why is the US funding a Barcelona library in the first place?

  3. “Democrats Abroad, the official overseas arm of the Democratic party, with representation in Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia, has criticized the U.S. administration’s gesture and defined it as “intolerable.” “We support Mayor Collboni’s position. We must respect laws, diversity and inclusion. This order should be illegal because rights cannot be taken away, least of all abroad, without prior congressional approval,” argues the entity, which will demonstrate in Sant Jaume square on March 29 against Trump’s policies in his first month in office. “What happens in the United States reverberates around the world, and cultural capitals like Barcelona must resist the onslaught of Trumpist populism.”

So just to make sure this is clear, there is a US political party that is opposing the funding being removed and is going to protest it in Spain.

Hopefully people realize that there is no need to have political parties from other countries in your country hosting demonstrations and attempting to influence your local politics.
