Ovos moles or Barrigas de Freiras? I went to Lisbon in 2001 and had an incredible dessert at the Pastelaria Suiça. I can’t figure out the name of it. BOTH internet searches for Barrigas de Freiras and Ovos Moles de Aveiro have pictures that look like the dessert I ate. Are they basically same??

I was just thinking about these yesterday…you never forget!
Please don’t confuse them. Petrol is not gas. Barrigas de freira takes almond and bread. Ovos moles only eggs. The waffer on Barrigas de freira was only introduced recently.
I’m not an expert by any measure, so take this with a grain of salt.
According to the «Livro de Pantagruel» (classic and renowned portuguese cookbook), barrigas de freira (page 642-643) can also use peach or pear jam as an ingredient for the filling, instead of *doce de ovos*. So that’s a regional variation to keep in mind.
Also, in accordance with the government site [produtos tradicionais](https://tradicional.dgadr.gov.pt/pt/cat/doces-e-produtos-de-pastelaria/722-barrigas-de-freira) «barrigas de freira», when made with *doce de ovos* filling, can also have shredded almonds in the filling and on top of the pastry.
So, those are at least 2 regards, in which they can differ from [ovos moles](https://tradicional.dgadr.gov.pt/pt/cat/doces-e-produtos-de-pastelaria/580-ovos-moles-de-aveiro-igp).
99% it was Ovos moles.
Do you remember if the outer shell had any sort of intentional shape? Like sea shell, fish, barrel, etc? If they did it’s most definitely Ovos Moles
A little bit out of subject but that pastry shop closed 🙁
You don’t have any pictures of “barriga de freira”. They’re all “ovos moles”. Maybe the problem is that you sourced Brazilian sites.
Those “barriga de freira” pictures are all from Brazilian websites. I’ve never heard or seen those desserts.
Ovos moles are very well known everywhere I. Portugal, so that’s likely it.
