UK considering ban on NHS procurement of Chinese goods made in Xinjiang. Tory MPs want ministers to follow health bill amendment banning goods from regions with ‘risk of genocide’

  1. Risk of genocide? Saudi Arabia is balls deep in creating a refugee crisis but Britain continues to export arms there.

But suspicion of something in china is enough for a ban?

  2. I don’t know what to believe about Xinjiang. It’s clear that there were tensions between the Chinese government and some Uyghurs for at least decades, Uyghurs felt shafted in China, they’ve experienced Uyghur terrorism/militant separatism, China has responded with some measures, but what the extent of those measures has been and how justified they were is unclear, because the media in many countries is clearly anti-Chinese (maybe due to their financial backers or due to it being good for clicks), Western governments have an incentive to be anti-China because China’s rise threatens their world dominance and on the other hand the CCP and Chinese media obviously has incentive to lie if there are atrocities going on. Then you have people online who love to bandwagon and share unverified claims and news to feel smart, enjoy the drama to fill some other gap in their own life (honestly, myself I mostly check the news when I’m not doing anything worthwhile myself) or get online popularity. I’ve seen travel youtubers go to Xinjiang and show it as having normal cities where there’s seemingly a mixture of Uyghur and Chinese culture, but whether that’s just away from the bad parts I don’t know – usually I find travel videos to be a great way to cut through the distorted views we get other countries or groups of people (which teach us to fear, hate or sweepingly stereotype others and have always ended up seeming absurd once I get a chance to actually interact with people myself, either in-person or online), along with sport or music-related videos (since both are global and usually involve regular people) or any videos filmed by locals – but youtube is banned in China, so locals rarely post videos, as they need a VPN.

  3. Either everyone or no one needs to be banned from this. Singling out the NHS makes no sense. Why is it ok for teachers to use these products but not doctors? Why are estate agents or accountants of swimming instructors not under the same mandate?

  4. They will just slap another address on them, maybe ShangHai, maybe even Hong Kong. How about billions of our Chinese made lateral flow tests that we bought?

  5. Could have been done at any point in the past ten years. But ok fine, Christ.

In fact that’s a pretty good summary of anything positive the Tories have done. Building renewable energy infrastructure, putting pressure on Russian Oligarchs, investigating claims of genocide in China. All of it things people were talking about ten years ago.
