Lib Dems set out roadmap for rejoining EU single market

  1. Stupid quesiton : does entering the single market includes freedom of movement and work (norway style)?

  2. Like I really hate the LibDems but single market access(freedom of movement) and election reform are the 2 biggest things I’m looking for in a candidate/party follow that on with nationalising public services and workers rights and I’ll contribute financially and physically.

  3. Makes no difference for the actual parties that have a chance of winning an election this policy would be toxic. The lib dems can say what they want as it will never have the chance to do it.

  4. Idky this comment section is anti lib dem in places, people should actually read their manifesto which is quite left wing. They would legally recognise non binary genders, recognise palestine, implement electoral reform, make it illegal for the government to access your internet data, legalise humanist marriage, put mental health on the same level as physical, promote workplace democracy and coops, stop arms sales to the saudis, make britain more federal and give greater power to devolves governments and try and make it so only english mps can vote on exclusively english matters, and more. People dismiss them as orange tories because they were in a coalition with them when if they tried to formed one with Lab they wouldn’t have had a majority, and labour had began to curb civil liberties, which the lib dems are not a fan of. Read the party’s manifesto ffs

  5. Speaking from inside the EU and with a deep personal affection for the UK, this is all nice but the EU already said that the UK couldn’t cherry pick like this after they left. So being outside the EU but in the free market or other agreements, its not likely to happen.

This is how it is for Norway and the other EEA countries, they have to take all the EU free market rules but dont get a vote or say in them. This situation would be pretty strange for the UK having executed brexit to get away from said rules ….. then to accept them again but not even have a say or any opt-outs any more. Further for small economies like the EEA ones its probably OK, but the UK is a lot bigger economically than any EEA country.

Now much as we Europeans like you Brits …. and we do by the way …. you’ve made your bed and you’re just going to have to lie in it now. I could see the UK being allowed to rejoin the the EU fully, but without all the opt-outs you had before, and you’d have to pay into the budget fully, unlike before. But otherwise, as it stands, I do believe the EU’s focus is, and should be, elsewhere than the UK for the coming years. So sorry guys …. ship’s sailed.

  6. If this is true, I will vote lib dem. I want to be back in Europe. If it’s not, then its back to the greens.

  7. I can’t believe the EU would be stupid enough to want us back.

But obviously the Fib Dems need something to differentiate themselves from the fellow neo-libs at both tory and Labour HQ’s….

  8. Going in would be the worst thing. If people think they’d accept us with open arms is deluded. We be bottom of the pile, have to take on the euro and have absolutely no power.

    BTW I voted remain.

  9. The concept of an EU free trade market for goods is a great one. Common standards available if people wanted to adopt them, easy transport of goods. Why did it have to be morphed into a free market for people? And worse, a political union? That is where it falls over. Why could it not have stayed the way as it was originally intended?

  10. Smart policy, there’s bound to be pro EU Tory voters who are dismayed by what has happened to the UK economy and then you’ve got everyone else who is pro EU to boost their votes too.

Doesn’t seem like Labour are pushing hard for rejoining the EU despite the huge amount of benefits it brings.
