Last year, the percentage of Internet users who experienced generative artificial intelligence (AI) services more than doubled from 2023, just after ChatGPT was released, indicating that one out of three had used it.

According to the “2024 Internet Use Survey” released by the Ministry of Science and ICT on the 30th, the percentage of respondents who have experienced Generative AI services nearly doubled from 17.6% in 2023 to 33.3% in 2024.

The number of respondents who said they had experienced the AI service itself rose steadily every year from 32.4% in 2021, to 60.3% in 2024.

In terms of satisfaction with AI’s degree of help, the transportation sector (98.3%) was the highest, while the necessity and future intention to use it were the highest in the residential convenience sector (78.2% of necessity and 58.7% of intention to use it) such as domestic support robots and Saul Internet home appliances.

Meanwhile, 97.7% of Internet users use instant messengers, and Kakao Talk, which accounted for 98.0%, is the most frequently used service. In addition, 95.4% of Internet users said they use video services such as YouTube.

Instead of purchasing services every time, the regular “subscribe” method is spreading throughout the digital economy. The percentage of Internet products using subscription services increased about 3.8 times from 13.1% in 2023 to 49.4% in 2024.

The increase in subscription service utilization by age is led by people in their teens and 30s. Compared to 2023, it rose 43.6 percentage points for teenagers, 40 percentage points for 20s, and 37 percentage points for 30s.

With overseas direct purchase sites such as AliExpress and Temu directly entering the domestic market, the use of overseas direct purchase by Internet shopping users increased from 20% in 2023 to 34.3% in 2024. By age group, those in their 30s (47.2%) were the highest, followed by those in their 20s (43.5%) and those in their 40s (36.8%).

The Internet access rate of all households was 99.97%, the same as the previous year, and the Internet use rate of household members aged 3 or older increased by 0.5 percentage points to 94.5%.

90.5% of Internet users use it at least once a day and an average of 20.5 hours a week, and Daegu (97.5%) has the highest Internet use, and Gangwon (88.9%) has the lowest Internet use.

The 2024 Internet usage survey was conducted on 25,509 households nationwide and 62,229 household members aged 3 or older.
