I support this, but not as a savings measure because people can do that individually. It’s better for the environment, better for traffic flow (less accordeon jams), less dependence on foreign oil.
But I also think it’s a hugely unpopular proposal that will not make it so I don’t get why Groen makes it. It’s like they’re actively trying to lose votes.
I don’t support it because people drive like crap when forced to drive slower.
Or… hear me out… Dynamic speed limits 🤯
100km/h at the busiest times of the day.
Went to the Netherlands the past weekend. Their limit there is 100 km / u between 6u – 19u and 120 km / u between 19u – 6u. Felt more enjoyable to drive while not everyone around me was in a hurry. And it’s better for the environment so I’d prefer it if they would just copy the Netherlands system.
Yes, good proposal.
I’m pretty much in favor. Actual average speed won’t drop a lot, slower does mean safer, much less difference between slower trucks and faster cars, more relaxed driving.

Funny to compare the comments over here vs the ones underneath the same hln article. Looks like reddit attracts some more sane people.
I actually wouldn’t mind this. On the whole, distances in Belgium are small enough for it not to matter.
The difference in fuel economy is also pretty stark. At 100km/h: 3.8 l/100km average, at 120km/h it’s around 4.4l/100km
R0 and R1/R2 are already 100km/h at all times anyway.
Time for elections.
Yet another reason to not vote Groen. The highways were designed to drive 120 km/h and would feel boringly slow at 100 km/h. As for the ring around brussels, some parts already feel this way while others aren’t that bad (the parts with 2 lanes only for example).
what about electric cars or hybrids? what about cars with good fuel conversion.
I have a small mild hybrid car that doesnt consume much and betweeen 100 and 120, the fuel difference is non noticable. All this law will do is increase the fines….
(sorry for bad english)
My experience since 10y :
Before 2012, I haved a company car but I changed work and did 100km/day.
I tried to ride on speedway to 100km/h with my cruise ctrl. First month, that really difficult to drive, but I was very surprise by results :
1/ average consumption down 1,5l (+/- 400€/year for same travel @1,25€/l of fuel)
2/ less noise in the car
3/ less wear on my tyres
4/ less stress (incredible!!)
5/ I enjoy the travel to follow a audiobook
6/ I loose only 6 min on my day
I recommand to try 100km/h on highways. Really. Not for Groen, not for planet.
Just for you.
😉
Alot of people are compairing it to the netherlands…
Ok lets also compaire to germany where some parts have no limit and other parts are 130. or france where when its sunny they go 130 and when rain 110.
So we’re basically telling the car enthusiasts to go fuck themselves and drive like slowpokes. Soon we’ll drive 70 on the highway and 30 in the cities if we keep heading into this avenue. Honestly why even bother buying a car with some power now? Let’s all drive 65hp cars at 100km/h… How fun that’ll be..
Driving isn’t fun anymore
Did some quick calculations:
Let’s say you drive Ghent – Brussels, 50km, pretty average trip for people taking the highway every day.
At 120 kph would take you 25 minutes
At 100 kph would take you 30 minutes
So you’d lose 5 minutes – EXCEPT – 30 minutes is already how long Google Maps tells me that trip takes, because you already can’t get a consistent 120 kph. So basically, barely anything would change?
Typical Belgian politics. You get specialists recommending a multi-faceted solution to reduce fuel consumption, and a political party picks out one single item on that list to make a big fuss about.
Why aren’t they also pushing work from home whenever possible? A parked car is consuming even less fuel! And less commuters means faster and more fuel efficient driving for everyone else!
And we want Groen to fuck off
It’ll just slow everything down and we’ll be stuck behind people who drive 70 or 80.
Same as when they reduced 90 to 70 and you get stuck behind someone driving 55-60
Plus Slow people will drive slow and fast drivers are going to overspeed anyway.
Aren’t we solving the same problem by going for electric cars? I don’t see the point in saving gas if i’m in a VW Id3
Since I changed jobs I never once had a traffic jam lol. You know where my fuel consumption goes up? At the cobstant zone 30-50-70-30 changes and useless traffic lights.
Groen should really shut their mouth for now.
Started driving a bit slower on my work commute ever since the fuel got so expensive the past 2 months. TBH the experience is not too bad on more crowded highways and it hardly takes more time for limited distances. But keep in mind this is out of own choice, not out of obligation.
Still totally against more restrictive legislation that doesn’t take into account the circumstances. For example I just can’t image how stupid it would be to be restricted to drive 100 km/h for over half an hour on a nearly empty 3-lane E40 between Leuven and Liege on a trip to the Ardennes.
Just like the 100km/h limit is generally a good idea for the typically crowded Brussels ring between Leonard and Drogenbos but is total bullshit between Drogenbos and Halle. Dynamic speed limits on the former would still be preferable but whatever.
The second cause of accidents (behind alcohol) is inattention. At 100km/h you are litterally sleeping. I tried last month to drive at 110km/h from Brussels to Luxembourg, it was hell. Even my “conservative” wife told me to accelerate and said she didn’t want to spend her life in the car. Why not impose 1 or 2 days of remote work? That simple measure would be far more relevant and efficient. And for those who can’t travel at home, they could receive a compensation.
Groen wil echt niet meer boven de kiesdrempel geraken.
I don’t support this. I have to drive for about an hour+ every day and on my previous job I had to ride for almost 2 hours a day.
When you have to drive for longer than 30mins after a long workday, chances are some people start getting drowsy. Now reduce the speed of 120km/h to 100km/h and you keep those people “longer” on the road, risking more (fatal) accidents. It can always be those 5 minutes on the road too long causing a fatal accident. Since they reduced speedlimit on the freeways from 90 to 70km/h I’ve read few to none articles about the positive results. Was there a reasonable reduction in fatal accidents as they implied?
As I read here from someone else: the highways are designed for 120km/h, so let’s keep it that way. As far as fuel consumption goes, you can always individually save up by choosing to do so. Forcing everyone by law to drive even slower seems wrong.
Doe dan gewoon zoals op plaatsen in Nederland. 6-19h 100km/h en 19h-6h 120 of zelfs 130km/h
It’s a shame the Netherlands kinda proved there’s a huge amount of benefit to this. Now I might consider feeling a small amount of shame when I say fuck em.
So EVs are not affected by this speed limit, right ?
Here are a few better proposals:
* reduce the working week from 5 working days and 2 days off to 4 and 3.
* more homeworking, thus less traffic and less pollution.
* for those companies with bosses that are stuck in the past and just force workers to come to the office just because, tax the companies for the kms driven by each employee.
* get rid of the dumbass system of giving company cars and fuel cards – it only encourages lots of useless driving in needlessly big cars. Those “benefits” only serve to tie the employee even more to the company and to cause more pollution. Give the people more money so they can buy their own cars, if they really need them. And they’ll pay more attention to how efficient the car is and how much fuel they use.
groen speedrunning their way to de kiesdrempel
Can musk make some tunnels where we can drift.
Im fine with it. If they remove the speed limit between 22u and 4u xd
There are good arguments to do this. But I don’t want to because I like driving fast. Cognitive dissonance is not fun 🙁
I already suffer this every day on the highway around Brussels, it sucks and the traffic jams are just as bad as before because idiots will still dance on their brakes full stop.
Party proposes way to deal with traffic congestion, fuel efficiency, air pollution and road safety…
> Nooooooo!!! You can’t do that!! It will make driving less fun!!!
Uhuh, if you can’t tell why this doofus posted this rather irrelevant piece of information, you’re one of the morons.
Were can I sign a petition against this and start a new petition to drive up the max speed to 130, or even 140? I drive once a month from Antwerp to south east Limburg to visit my parents and if I can drive 10 km of those 80 km highway 120 km/h it is a lot. Traffic is keeping us from driving faster. Let the people at night enjoy the highway even more.
The lower the speed limit, the more traffic jams. I dont know where the boundary lies, but at some point the benefit of lower speed will be surpassed by the amount of traffic jams right?
I barely drive a few 1000 km a year with my car so no, for the few km I drive I don’t want any speed limit of 100km/h.
I go to my work daily by train and yes I live near a railway station so I don’t commute by car to the railway, same when I did my bachelor studies I always used bicycle + train. I did my part. Don’t annoy me with a stupid speed limit of 100km/h.
1 person in the car: max 90.
2 people in the car: max 100.
3 people in the car: max 110.
4 people in the car: max 120.
Watch how quickly Belgians suddenly do find ways to communicate and organise carpooling.
Can Groen please fuck right off. God, who even votes on idiots like this…
