On this day in 1955, the Cypriots take up arms against British rule on their island and demand union with Greece

  1. As a young leftie I was fascinated by this struggle for self-determination. I remember reading Albert Camus’ letter about the issue and Fidel Castro praising Grivas and his actions against imperialism.

The Cypriots won their independence but the Brits sadly reacted way too brutally. In an unheard manner for a Western nations of the time. They even burned Grigoris Afxentiou *alive* in a medieval manner.

  2. Unfortunately Cyprus never achieved its goal for Union with Greece due to many reasons.

Now its once again hoping to at least achieve its full independence as a third of it is illegally occupied by a foreign power once more.

I wish somehow the occupation ends soon and Cyprus can slowly but steadily achieve its dreams.
