This giant sun dial was installed in 2008 in Hebden Bridge. But it was put up in the winter, so is an hour out during the sunny summer months

  1. The winter time is the actual real time though – GMT.

Summer time is the pretend one – GMT+1

  2. Why don’t they rotate the town by 15 degrees? Then back again in the autumn.

  3. If they can adjust Stonehenge twice a year they can certainly do this.

  4. I live in Hebden and genuinely never once thought it was anything other than a thing in my way to the pub. Nice to know it’s shit clock.

  5. You know I have two clocks one is European time the other is our time and it alternates between them because they’re one hour ahead. I don’t need to have knowledge of when European time is because I could just add one hour on and change the clock but I’m a lazy m***********

  6. They should be campaigning to get rid of BST, bloody waste of everyone’s time!

  7. Apropos of nothing, Hebden Bridge has a rep for being heavily populated with ladies who like ladies. Any truth therein?

  8. I can sort of beat that.. I bought a radio controlled clock from Lidl in around 2008. It was fine, up until a few years ago when the batteries finally went flat. I’ve since lost – and found, then re-lost them again – and as the clock is controlled from Europe, it’s now *always* one hour ahead.

I was thinking of asking on here if anyone knew the instructions for it, but been lazy to.

  9. This week excluded, I don’t see a great benefit in creating a sun dial in Britain 🤔

  10. Sundials show solar time. GMT is a smoothed average (the clue is in ‘mean time’) of solar time which leads or lags GMT by a variable but predictable amount throughout the year. And then in the summer, clocks are one hour ahead of GMT anyhow.

  11. What is needed is transferable marking stones. Shift them one space to the left in Summer. Problem solved

  12. Oh sure, it’s _the solar system_ that’s wrong, not this stupid notion of giving everyone jet lag twice a year for no good reason.

    Summer time should be abolished.

  13. Given the number of times I’ve been in the Shoulder, I’ve never noticed this or at least I’ve never noticed this being more than an object in my way.

  14. Should have had inter changeable hour slabs so they could update it every 6 months to the correct time 😋

  15. They should have made it rotatable so they could rotate it an hour back and forth.

  16. I’m still waiting for the suspension bridge they were going to build between Pecket well and Heptonstall.

  17. Well that just puts it in Greenwich Meantime, as opposed to British summertime. Surely that is correct?

  18. Oh sure. Lets install an art feature that requires the sun to be properly experienced in the Winter months when there’s not much sun and Daylight Savings is active. Oh. and let’s not account for that at all…
