  26. I’m curious to see how any right wingers, MAGA/Trump supporters see this as tyranny. Le Pen herself said she expected a guilty verdict. Banning her from holding a public office is good, especially if the reason for banning her is because she used her position to steal money from the people.

    I know this will be a risky question to ask, but if you found out Trump, Musk, Rubio, Vance, Hegseth, Bondi, Gabbard, etc., were pocketing taxpayers money while going on luxury cruises, golfing every day, etc., would you be upset?

    If someone was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 12 year old, would you want them to be able to run for President?

    It’s not politically motivated. Français Fillon, a former Prime Minister from a different party, got a harsher sentence for a similar crime (he gave his wife a ficticious job while she was supposed to be his aid in French Parliament).

    France is very far from being the greatest country regarding corruption (we’re roughly on the same level as other european latin countries I’d say, but a far cry from nordic countries). But those last decades, we’ve tried and condemned more politicians than usual. Sarkozy for example is in the middle of a trial right now.
    It’s not enough, but it’s still something. And it isn’t aimed at one specific party.

I think it’s important to note that Marine Lepen (the woman condemned here) once advocated that if a politician was found guilty of embezzlement of public funds (or any crime related), they should be banned from elections for life and that overall the french justice system was far too lenient on politicians.

    Guess she got lucky the government never picked up on that…

    The European Union has nothing to do with that. She was judged by a French court, according to the French laws. It’s just that she committed the crime in the European Parliament.

    She was found guilty for embezzlement. It has nothing to do with her views. The only difference is that the French don’t shy away from actually prosecuting crimes when the criminal in question also happens to be a politician. That’s how it SHOULD work.
