Gotta punish those damn yankee states for all their insurrection /s
According to the article, the US electricity market in this region currently has low prices and Canadian power costs 10% more to the US with US tariffs, so the Canadian generator has made a market decision to sell less to US customers and more to customers that pay a better price. (A smart move considering they have a drought so less water to generate electricity. ) This is in keeping with the conditions of its current contracts and the current US President’s desire for Canada to export less to the US.
But people in the US somehow think that the Canadian company is being unfair not selling them a product at a low price that the US government says they shouldn’t want and penalises US customers for buying,
Talk about mixed messages from the US…
That is the danger of basing your economy on tariffs, it assumes that we have to sell into the US no matter what conditions there are. We are not obliged to sell anything into the US market and if it has to be done at a loss what is the point.
[shocked Pikachu]
I think this also highlights the wisdom of generating the electricity near the demand rather than sourcing it from some distant source.
