Global aid effort begins in Myanmar as junta lets in foreing rescuers • FRANCE 24 English

The death toll from a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar jumped to 1,644, the ruling junta said Saturday, with 3,408 people injured. At least 139 people are still missing. The quake also hit neighbouring Thailand, where a skyscraper under construction collapsed and killed at least 10 people. Vice President for Program Delivery at the International Rescue Mission, Elinor Raikes, joins us from London.

  3. Why is the media so obsessed with death numbers. They tout it like a sport score. Focus on other things. To say a large number of casualties is sufficient.

  8. It hard to even get pictures or videos out of Myanmar because of the military government. How are you going to get Aid in when they still fighting in Myanmar. People need help in Myanmar but is the military government in Myanmar going to only let their side get help. If they still bombing Mandalay and the junta still fighting, you never going to get Aid in.

  16. The (Disasters emergency committee) DEC site cannot make a charity-project unless 3 criteria are met. The DEC have the text dumbphone funder option. If DEC allowed small (cup of coffee size, maybe three quid) funder texters, set up in a specific way and as a proxy for their charity chums groups (Oxfam, or Christian-Aid or whatever), it could allow the stats to go to the selected charity-chum plus DEC too. There are 13 disaster categories on DEC, and of Hexadecimal (16 combinations), that could be (from 0 to F) 0 to C. Then the last three character D, E an F could be generic for say homoeostasis needs of food (which includes water) and shelter (which includes for warming or cooling) and air (be it breathing, dust-storm or particulate cloud such as poisoning or windy-weather). So the member of the public writing (into the funder texter on their dumbphone) the Hex letter 0-F and then a comma with a checksum (CRC32 which is 8 characters) representing an appeal for Myanmar-earthquakes or Antarctica-stubbed-toes or whatever and then in parenthesis brackets another different CRC32 checksum (from the same list on the site) to represent charity-proxy (Oxfam or a different checksum for Christian-Aid whatever) with the quid symbol and the amount numerical would do (but then also allow the member of the public, after a semicolon to write their electronic mail so they can get extra things to do or hear about via a POST-Method and GET-Method secure site location). It then means people can use a phone and it allows DEC and other chum charities to know what stats are of interest, and yet they can all just use the one DEC system instead of needing to configure their own software and telecoms gadget system. Any published checksum would be a known-quantity on a rainbow table ion advance to avoid collisions.
