Deputy Minister of Hydrocarbons Iris Cárdenas participated as a panelist in the keynote address “Environmental Regulations to Intensify Exploratory Drilling in Oil and Gas in Peru,” where she announced the development of a regulatory proposal designed to streamline seismic exploration and exploratory drilling projects.

Cárdenas referred to Peru’s potential, such as the Madre de Dios Basin. “To the north, we must leverage the North Peruvian pipeline, which requires the development of oil fields in the Marañón Basin, while to the south, we must increase gas reserves,” he added.

The deputy minister indicated that the regulations presented seek to guarantee environmental sustainability and promote responsible development of the hydrocarbon sector, fostering competitiveness and investment in activities key to the country’s growth.

“We have seen fit to begin exploring ways to contribute, within the current regulatory framework, to reducing administrative complexity and speeding up evaluation times, in order to boost exploration activity and promote more investment projects in this field,” he added.

Cárdenas noted that this proposed Supreme Decree was sent to the Ministry of the Environment for evaluation. “The regulation provides a regulatory framework for the development of a complementary Environmental Management Instrument (IGASPE), taking into account the Public Environmental Baseline, and whose evaluation period would be 30 business days.”

At another point, the deputy minister spoke about the importance of keeping surrounding communities informed, as they must be aware of and have access to information about exploration activities so they can make informed decisions.

“We have decided to resume developing internships in indigenous communities to strengthen their capacities, with active participation from the State.”

During the conference, organized by the Geological Engineering Chapter of CIP-CDLima, the panelists and audience welcomed this initiative presented by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), which will allow for the promotion of more hydrocarbon exploration projects, with only five currently underway.
