SEADRIFT, Texas – DOW Chemical has submitted a construction application to bring nuclear power to its Seadrift plant, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to replace its aging energy sources.
The company is working with nuclear firm X-Energy to develop plans for a small modular reactor (SMR) to meet the plant’s energy needs. According to DOW, the current energy sources at the Seadrift facility are “near the end of their operational life.”
Approval of the construction permit for the SMR could take up to 30 months, delaying the start of construction.
In February, the Seadrift City Council passed a resolution supporting nuclear energy advancement by the Texas Legislature and DOW Chemical.
