Today, at 7:19 p.m. US Eastern time, Senator Cory Booker set the all-time record for a marathon speech protesting many different aspects of the second Trump administration. The speech's formal status as a filibuster is debatable because, as NPR noted, "that's not technically what Booker's speech is, since he is not trying to block a specific bill or nominee". The senior senator from New Jersey has so far yielded to multiple questions from Senate colleagues over the course of the speech.

You can read more about filibusters here on the US Senate's site. You can find this subreddit's live discussion thread on the speech here. You can watch the speech here on PBS NewsHour's YouTube channel, and find other information about it on the Wikipedia page for the speech, which is still ongoing at the time of posting.

The previous Senate speech length record was held by Strom Thurmond, at the time a Democrat from the state of South Carolina, attempting to block or delay passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

  1. Black Democratic Senator beating a segregationist’s record, how poetic

  2. #History made by a BLACK man to beat Strom Thurmonds record

So poetic I could just about shed a tear if I weren’t so damn proud of him already

  3. This was one of the most inspiring things I’ve seen in years

  4. So fitting that a black man broke that racist’s record

  5. “Chuck, this is the only time I’m ever gonna tell you no.”

    I loved that.

  6. Repost for people asking what’s the point:

Yes, he’s doing this for attention. I don’t say that in a derisive way. He has a platform to be heard, and this will only make that platform  bigger. It’s a sign that this isn’t “normal” times, so we can’t take “normal” measures against a party willing to crash through the boundaries of basic constitutional doctrines- due process, checks and balances, freedom of speech, etc. After Biden got so much press for his age (and some rightfully so), it’s a show of stamina. Unlike Ted Cruz, who burned up his time reading dr suess and talking about White Castle, Booker has filled his time with substantive complaints. He’s articulate through the 23rd hour (so far). He’s showing he has the ingredients for the next leader. I’m not saying he’ll be the democratic nominee, but he’s certainly taking his seat at the table.

  7. History.

I remember when Booker was in the debates for President against some really big names.

I hope he runs again.  This man actually loves this country.

  8. I’ve been listening to him since this morning. What impresses me is not the time or the record – it’s the heart and knowledge that he demonstrated for that amount of time. Total LFG Energy.

Not even a single reading of Green Eggs and Ham. In a related story, fuck Ted Cruz.

  9. And he said “let’s keep it rolling.” Fucking hero.

  10. Absolutely incredible. Glad that a segregationist no longer holds the record – it’s been a long-time stain on this country that the record was held by someone arguing in support of segregation.

Please – more acts of resistance like this, Democrats.

  11. Amazing! Thank you Senator Booker and his staff and everyone who asked him questions.

Also shout out to the dude that yelled “24 more!” A few mins ago lol

  12. I can’t believe he’s still going. A rare proud day in America.

  13. Erasing a stain on American history of the racist stand Thurmond made, now we have a record standing for WHATS RIGHT.

  14. If this isn’t a call to action for Democrats, I don’t know what is. People want us to actually CARE about them. This is the ultimate show of respect to the American people to talk so long and not make it meaningless. No “silent filibuster”. Booker is using this moment to shed light on the common American person. This deserves proper news coverage and should not only be used to get more Democrats elected but also to pull this country back to where we should be: a place where we care about one another. You don’t have to agree with everything he said, but you cannot deny that he truly cares about his fellow American today.

  15. Legendary performance by Booker. Maybe this kickstarts the opposition movement against Trump. It’s not going to be easy, but we need to keep fighting. Every day of delay for the Trump administration is a benefit to Americans.

  16. the roar of applause was truly tear jerking. Never thought that much support for something like this could come form our current senate. it was extremely reassuring.

    >Booker, just minutes away from the speaking record: “This is when the most precious ideas of our country are being tested, where the Constitution and the question is being called — Where does the constitution live? On paper? Or in our hearts? This is the moment.”

  18. Well, shit…

If this wasn’t the inspiration I really fucking needed right now. I’m gonna give his office a call just to say thanks.

  19. Look at him- not reading from notes. 👏🏻

He spoke A LOT just from memory. So damn intelligent.

  20. How is he able to recite figures on science investment after 24 hours?

it’s insane how he is still coherent, especially given you can see he’s trying to force his eyes to stay open, great man.

  21. Anything that strikes Thurmond from the history books is good.

  22. Anyone who wants to dunk on Senator Booker really should have tuned in and listened for an hour or so (might not be too late to still do so, actually). I missed the first hour but it’s been playing in the background ever since. I wasn’t expecting it to mean as much as it has.

The most common comment I see in the chat on YT goes something like this: we need to match this man’s energy and show up on April 5th.

He’s inspiring and energizing people. It matters.

  23. This will go down as one of the most legendary moments in US politics history.

Congratulations, Cory, and thank you for taking that pos Strom Thurmonds name out of the record books.

  24. Cory Booker topples one racist asshole while ripping another one apart, you love to see it

  25. Fuck Strom Thurmond. Truly.

    Go Senator Booker!

  26. He didn’t eat or use the bathroom for 24 hours. He hasn’t sat down either. Stayed near his desk with two glasses of water, a binder, and box of tissues. Absolutely incredible 😲

  27. Took him 24 hours to list all the wrongs the Trump admin did in the first 3 months.

  28. God damn… he is bringing back my faith in the Democratic Party. I thought they had all just given up.

Thank you Senator Booker! You are incredible!
